Students recently learned about the elements of a story and the story "mountain". After reading a story, they sketched each component of the story mountain and created a large story mountain. Then students used Ozobot, a line following robot, to navigate his way in the order of events of the story, performing a special move after reaching each component of the story mountain.
In Miss Despreaux's 1st grade class, as an extension activity, students had the opportunity to make observations of the sun by creating sundials and recording the shadows at various times of the day. Students applied their background knowledge and shared their thoughts with their classmates. Many noticed the sundial resembled a clock as well as the movement of the shadow based on the sun's position in the sky.
Students used Ozobot to help aid in the concept of regrouping in addition. They drew a path for this line following robot as we discussed the idea behind place value and regrouping. They then coded Ozobot to perform different functions as he completes the addition problem.
First grade students are exploring poetry using their 5 senses. They are working through the writing process and will soon publish their poems digitally using storybird.com. Will you be able to guess their mystery poems?
Do engineers think about natural disasters, such as earthquakes, when designing their structures? First graders agreed that they do. They explored a design challenge where they worked in teams to design and create a structure with a designated minimal height using straws and playdoh. Then they tested their designs on our "homemade" quake table. Reflection questions that were considered were: What was the most difficult thing about completing this challenge? What were some things you noticed that happened to your structure during the "quake"? Most students agreed that having a strong foundation was vital.
First grade cluster students have been diligently working to create their very own poems all while learning how to use the dictionary, thesaurus and rhyming dictionaries. They began by learning how to brainstorm while creating their own "mind" maps to map our their ideas. Then they used the writing process to create their own poems while with their literary tools at their fingertips. They explored emotions, rhyming, and using literary devices such as onomatopoeias or sound words.
Stars create patterns in the night sky because they don't move... After a brief overview of constellations, students came to the conclusion that stars do not move and the earth in fact is moving or rotating. All first grade students were invited to create constellation projectors and then were allowed to get their creative juices flowing and design and create their very own constellations.
