Students in Mrs. Simila's 2nd grade class took on the vehicle design challenge. Students used the engineer design process and their imaginations to use the given materials to design a form of transportation for Flat Stanley to travel in. In this hour long design challenge skills students focused on were: effective communication and collaboration, applying background knowledge, time management and speaking and listening effectively.
Students are currently using Newsela.com to research articles on everyday heroes. Skills they are working on are: identifying character traits, annotating, self to text connections, the writing process.
All 2nd grade students showcased their knowledge by creating a water cycle triorama. Students had to be sure to include all the parts of the water cycle and label each process. One of the design challenges while working in groups was to include some sort of moving part or pop up in their design. One of the great things about collaboration is that students learn how to work with each other and build their communication skills. Congratulations on a job well done 2nd grade!
As an extension of the 2nd language arts unit on Flat Stanley, all 2nd grade students participated in a design challenge. Students used the engineer design process to complete this challenge with specific materials. They brainstormed and collaborated in small groups to come up with a design and executed their plan.
