If you and your child decide to celebrate Halloween on Friday, October 31 by having your child wear a costume, it needs to be appropriate for the school environment. Please follow these expectations:
• Like last year, due to safety of the costume wearer and others, we are respectfully asking that inflatable costumes are not to be worn to school as we have come to realize that they are truly not appropriate for our setting.
• Costumes are not allowed to have any dangerous objects i.e. toy swords, toy guns, chains, toy knives, etc. Please leave these items at home for the Halloween evening fun
• If the costume requires make up, the makeup must be done tastefully and applied before coming to school.
• Masks are not permitted. We need to be able to identify all of our students.
• Costumes are expected to NOT be too scary, so that our youngest students are not frightened.
• Costumes that are offensive to others' cultures and belief systems are not permitted.
• Your children must be able to use the washroom independently in their costume and must be able to participate in regular school activities (recess, PE, working a desk/carpet, etc.)
Please know that if your children come to school dressed in a costume that does not follow these expectations, your child may be asked to change out of their costume. Thank you for your understanding and cooperation. If you have any questions about your children's choice of costumes, please talk to the classroom teacher or Mrs. Anjos to avoid any disappointment.
We look forward to the excitement of HALLOWEEN with you!!
We held our annual DEAR (Drop Everything And Read) on Monday, October 20 to honour and celebrate the gift of reading. The following students won book prizes in our draw: Emmett Hawkings, Stefan Ruicea, Cali McArthur, Charlie Gajowiak, Greyson Hopfner, Zella Bollinger, Logan Jennings-Bates, Colton Hermann, Brooks Young, Dane Gouliquer, Llewyn Bakalos and Abigail Cherry.
My name is Cst Ryan Rode and I thought I would take a bit of this school newsletter to introduce myself. I am the School Resource Officer for West Kelowna and Peachland schools. As a police officer, I have worked West Kelowna and Peachland for sixteen years. This is my second year in my role as your School Resource Officer. I have had the privilege of meeting many students, parents and school staff over the past year.
I understand that I will be spending a lot of time, especially in the elementary schools and middle schools, giving classroom presentations on a variety of topics including safety, bullying, internet safety, drug prevention, healthy relationships and more. I spend some of my time talking to students who have made poor decisions, taking the opportunity to educate them on possible consequences and how to avoid making poor decisions again. Occasionally I am brought in for enforcement, which may include tickets for bylaw offences, or drug and alcohol related offences, and on rare occasions for arrests for criminal offences. I am a liaison between the regular duty members and the schools, as well as a contact for parents, students and school staff, addressing a wide range of questions and concerns.
A little about myself, I am a dad of two teenage boys. I attended and graduated MBSS sometime during the 90’s. You can say that I’m a West Kelowna boy, living here since I was two years old. I enjoy hiking, most sports and travelling to NHL cities to watch my team(Oilers) make a run for the cup. I look forward to meeting more folks this year and a new school year!

Childminding @ PAC Meetings
A friendly reminder that childminding during PAC meetings is available only for students in Kindergarten to Grade 5. Childminding is offered through HGE PAC in the school gym and students are supervised by interested Grade 5 students. If you have a responsible intermediate interested in babysitting please email the PAC at hgeparents@gmail.com. Please know that the grade 4 or 5s who do take on this important role of "babysitters" during these meetings, do so knowing they are caring for younger children and having older middle students attend can make it challenging for them to lead with confidence. While we value connections with middle school students, we ask for your support in keeping childminding limited to children in grades K–5. If you have any questions, please contact the HGE PAC President, Dani Walls by emailing hgeparents@gmail.com. Thank you!
