Mr. Grider's Accident

On April 27, 2018 I was unfortunate to be in a motorcycle accident that caused me to miss 6 weeks of the remaining school year. I was leaving Sequoia to go to my house in Camarillo when I crashed into the back of a van on on the 101 freeway going North near the truck scales. I was riding to the flow of traffic as I passed the truck scales when I saw the van in front of me stop. I put on both the front and back brakes causing my motorcycle to wobble sideways (fish tale) and losing control. I was flung from my motorcycle and hit the van in front of me and landed very hard onto the freeway ground. As a result of the accident, I broke my right leg (fibula and tibia) in three different places. I also broke the scaphoid bone in both left and right wrist along with 3 other bones in my right wrist. I was lucky to have survived and only had broken bones.

Due to the accident I was rushed to Las Robles Hospital and stayed there for 6 days to heal and had 2 surgeries to repair my leg and right wrist. Several months later I had 2 more surgeries to my left and right wrist. I will be having one more surgery after the 5k in November to remove several screws in my leg. Yes, I am the bionic man. I have 2 screws in both of my scaphoid bones in my wrist and a large intrameduallary nail along with 6 screws in my leg to repair my broken leg. A intrameduallary nail is a long rod that is inserted below my knee cap into the leg and through the tibia down to the ankle. Screws are used to keep the rod stable and from not moving. For the first month, I was only able to get around with the help of a walker and wheel chair. After 6 weeks I graduated to crutches.

After all of my surgeries and doctors appointments, I took the summer to heal and go to physical therapy. From mid June until early August I went to physical therapy 4 to 5 times a week to strengthen my hands and leg. I needed to learn how to walk properly without the use of a crutch. I am not fully healed yet, but I am getting there and improving every day. I appreciate all of my students for their patience and understanding as I go through my healing process.

The doctors from the hospital said what saved my life was I took the time to wear the proper safety gear. I had a excellent helmet, padded jacket, heavy duty gloves, kevlar lined biking pants, and proper motorcycle shoes. Everyone can follow the same example by wearing your helmets when riding your bikes, scooter, and roller blades. Please be safe because I would never want anyone to go through the experience that I did.
