This is a CTE course that focuses on the development of humans from prenatal through adolescence. The course looks at the physical, cognitive, and social-emotional development. The first semester tends to be heavy on genetic, prenatal, and infant development. Second semester, we dive more into the educational applications of the subject matter. We study developmental milestones, social-emotional development, learning theories, information processing (memory development), intelligence theories, academic achievement, special education, language development, and SO much more.

We even take care of ROBOT BABIES! At least that’s what I call them. Students will have the opportunity second semester to care for an infant simulator to experience the challenges and rewards of parenting an infant. The baby is anatomically correct for a two-month-old baby and mimics all the behaviors of a real baby. Students will need to bottle feed, “change” the diapers, support its head, comfort it, and burp it throughout the weekend. They can choose to co-parent or try it alone! The simulation experience is part of a semester-long project.

This class is a great gateway course to several programs on campus. Ideally, students will enjoy the connection to education. The course (particularly the second semester) looks at development through an educational lens. However, students may enjoy the physical and medical side of the course, which may inspire them to try Ms. Barlev’s Allied Health Pathway! Child Development is also a great introduction to psychology and would support either the CP or AP Psychology courses.

This class is the recommended introductory class of the pathway. It is open to 9th-12th graders. It also pairs nicely with students interested in psychology or medical professions. NO PREREQUISITE.
