LEAP@MS51 strives to meet students at their interests, allowing participating students to select up to 6 different actvities throughout the week, and up to 6 new activities for every cycle 3 times a year. By the end of the year, students would have selected up to 18 different activities to try and build new skills in! Our activities are buildling in portfolio based projects, allowing our participating students to have a complete virtual portfolio of all their work in each activity during their time in the program.
By definition, a portfolio is a compilation of materials that exemplifies your belifs, skills, qualifications, education, training, and experiences. As the competition ramps up for enrollment into competitive high schools and colleges, we're noticing that many youth often wait too late to begin building a portfolio of their work and experiences. We'd like to start off our participating students at LEAP@MS51 by helping them start that process and having a head start against their competition by having a complete virtual portfolio for students to walk away with in the event they need evidence of their work and experience when registering for high schools, external programs, and even college.
Participants are selected by a first-come, first-served basis. Race, gender, income, and other forms of identity do NOT affect you or your child(ren)'s enrollment into the program. Families on our waitlist will be enrolled into the program in the order the applications were recieved.
LEAP@MS51 currently only has 121 slots every year. Each year, LEAP@MS51 is assigned a slot count by DYCD (Department of Youth and Community Development) to be reached prior to the start of program.
Currently, there is no way to increase chances for selection. Based on the community interest, LEAP@MS51 may reach out to waitlisted families to do a concerted outreach effort to the city to increase funding for programs, to increase the number of slots we have available for families.
