QUEST's 1st grade theme is Transformation
Units of Study:
"Do You Hear what I Hear?" - Creative Process/Sound unit. The science and art of sound
Product: Design, build and write music for an original instrument.
"Gifts That Bloom" - Affective unit Exploration of skills, gifts and talents.
Product: Design and build 3 original miniature items that represent the student's skills, gifts and talents. Attach the items to an bouquet of tissue paper flowers that was made by the child.
"Transportation Transformation" - Creative Awareness/Divergent Thinking unit Exploration of Transportation methods
Product: Transform an old shoe into a new type of transportation device and write a fictional story describing the creative things that will happen when a magical button is pushed.
"Food" - Creative Process/Independent Study unit Exploration of Modern vs Traditional farming and of International foods
Product: Design and build a "Modern Machine Harvester" for a crop that is currently harvested by hand.
Product: Design, build and write about an original dessert.
"Fables & Puppetry" - Critical and Creative Thinking
Product: Plan and write your own Fable
Early finisher's extension: Design and create complex puppets and a puppet stage to retell their Fable in another way.
Sound unit: Optional Extension Activities
With your child, read* and watch the book of Ada’s Violin by Susan Hood. This nonfiction story of Paraquay’s Recycled Orchestra is well done but it is a stretch for first grade QUESTer's to watch in a class setting due to its length, language level and the quantity of unfamiliar topics. The students will be introduced to the recycled orchestra in our class and will spend time comparing those recycled instruments with new ones. As you read, consider stopping the story at various parts to check for understanding. Your child will benefit from your expanded explanations.
Talk to your child about the sounds they hear around them everyday. How would they describe those sounds in words? How do the sounds change in different locations - the woods versus a city street? Brainstorm words to describe pleasant and unpleasant sounds.
