Science
Science at HMS is inquiry-focused where students investigate phenomena, develop and revise evidence-based claims, and communicate their understanding of real-world problems to others. Our goal is to develop in students the skills of inquisitive scientists rather than students who have a simple mastery of science facts.
Mathematics
At HMS, we are focused on building thinking classrooms in Mathematics. Whether in grade-level math or PACE math (advanced), all our classrooms are focused on increasing students' ability to think mathematically, communicate their understandings, and apply problem solving strategies rather than mimicking in mathematics.
Advanced Language Arts
In Language Arts at HMS, we are developing critical readers and writers who develop well-reasoned arguments and can communicate their ideas effectively to varied audiences. All students at HMS take Advanced Language Arts. Students' reading ability is scaffolded through the use of leveled texts, small-group instruction, and individualized supports.
Social Studies
Inquiry-based social studies at HMS begins with a complex and open-ended question for students to explore. When students investigate this question, they aren’t acting as record keepers but as social scientists seeking to understand the world and share this understanding with others. Social Studies at HMS is focused on student critical thinking, communication, and collaboration.
