What is modeling?

Modeling means you point to words on the AAC device while you speak. It doesn't have to be every word. Just like you would model signs to someone learning sign language, we model pushing buttons on the AAC device.

Why is modeling important?

Learning how to use an AAC device takes time, models, and explicit instruction!

Providing an AAC device to a person might seem like achieving the goal, but it's really just the beginning of the journey!

Model without Expectation

We model AAC so everyone can learn AAC. We don't want to engage in a power struggle and require our children to talk back. When they are motivated to communicate they will! Focus on finding reasons to talk, as opposed to enforcing responses.
