Presume potential
Everyone has something to say and everyone can learn AAC. When we provide robust AAC tools and build a supportive environment, we are providing access to communication!
Why is it important to provide access to AAC?
You expect your child to communicate
You are giving your child opportunities to communicate with AAC in all their natural settings
You see everyday activities and routines as opportunities for communication
Your child sees their symbols being used
What NOT to do!
Check out this video with our AAC user, Chloe. When she doesn't have access to her AAC device, she can't participate in the conversation!
When we make sure our children always have access to their device, we show them that we value communication!
Here are some tips to make sure your child has access to thier AAC:
Always make sure to charge your child's device every night!
Help your child learn to bring their device with them and always have it nearby, even when at home.
Print out paper copies (called "core boards) of the home screen of your child's AAC device. Place copies around the house where your child can see and touch them. Laminate them and use them where you might not want to use the device, such as in the bathroom. Share copies with friends and extended family members!
Building an AAC Habit
Think about your day. Pick one daily routine with your child. Now commit to always making sure you have the AAC device with you during that routine. Write it down to help you or set a reminder on your phone! Practice having the device with you during that routine. Just make sure it's within reach. At first, you don't worry about using it. Just have it with you!
After a week, try adding in the iPad to another daily routine. Take small steps and soon you'll always have that device accessible to your child!
