AAC Awareness Month is dedicated to the individuals who use and advocate for AAC. We get to celebrate, include, and bring awareness this month (and every month) to families, educators, and LISD Staff.
Here are the Top 5 Ways you can help be an AAC Advocate for your student:
Bring your child's AAC device everywhere. Communication happens in all environments so don't leave their AAC at home!
Touch buttons on their talker. We need families and educators to model those words on the AAC device in a fun and meaningful way. Stay on the home page as much as you can and use the search feature if you need to.
Keep it charged and ready to go. Consider a light tech backup for when it's charging. Need help with that? Reach out to your campus SLP.
Use Guided Access (if appropriate). We want to make sure our AAC devices are for communication. Keep Guided Access on so your student can use their AAC for talking and other tablets for fun things like games or YouTube.
Make AAC fun! Describe what you're doing and what your child is doing. Avoid quizzing and lots of questions. We want to make learning their device enjoyable.
