Introduction to Engineering Design (IED) is one of two foundational courses in the Project Lead the Way (PLTW) high school pre-engineering program. In this foundation course you will dig deep into the engineering design process by applying and concurrently developing your knowledge and skills in math, science, technology, and engineering to hands-on projects. You will work both individually and in teams to design solutions to a variety of problems using 3D modeling software, and use an engineering notebook to document your work. The major focus of the course is to expose you to the design process, research and analysis, teamwork, communication methods, global and human impacts, engineering standards, and technical documentation.
IED assumes no previous knowledge, but you should be enrolled in college preparatory or honors math and science. You will employ engineering and scientific concepts to solve engineering design problems. You will also use a state of the art 3D solid modeling design software package to design solutions for proposed problems. You will develop problem-solving skills and apply your knowledge of research and design to create solutions to various challenges that increase in difficulty throughout the course. You will also learn how to document your work, and communicate your solutions to your peers and members of the professional community.
