Contests!

Around the World

For 2022-23 school, Unbound asked writers and artists to submit work that showcases places around the world.

Haikuween

For our first contest of the 2021-22 school, Unbound decided to focus on Haikus. These are poems that follow a 5-7-5 syllable pattern.  The winning haikus are inspired by the following themes: Halloween, togetherness, or home. Please enjoy the winning pieces.

1st place

A Reflection of My Childhood by Maria Kaffes

cotton candy skies

hugged the earth in pink

and blue in mystical swirls

what once meant bedtime

sky darkening overhead

now signals nightlife

teens emerge from homes

the night beckoning them to

make sweet memories

but somewhere in the

whispering winds, their

childhood enchants them back home

for that one family

tradition they will pass down

and hold in their hearts

the one thing that will

wrap them in a warm blanket

and provide comfort

because we’re older.

stuck in the limbo of young

and old, where to turn?

when the future looms

when we feel so lost, unsure

the past calls us home to rest

we find comfort in

resting our worrying heads

in sweet nostalgia

do you ever wonder

how the sun has seen us grow?

and each shining star

they have seen us cry

but they’ve seen us dance with joy

they shine bright for us

one day they will call

us home, but until they do

look up to the skies.
