English 9 Academic -

In Grade 9 oral language instruction emphasizes dramatic reading of literary selections and planned oral presentations. The reading and literature component focuses on a study of fiction and nonfiction genres. Writing instruction develops skills in narrative, expository, and informational writing. Direct vocabulary instruction improves students’ reading and writing fluency and prepares them for the SOL, SAT, and ACT tests. Students produce documented research papers, using print, electronic databases, and on-line sources.

Students will most likely move into English 10 Academic, but may be recommended by the teacher for English 10 Honors.

English 9 Honors -

Direct vocabulary instruction improves students’ reading and writing fluency and prepares them for the SOL, SAT, and ACT tests. Students produce documented research projects, using print, electronic databases, and on-line sources.

There is more reading in the English 9 Honors class, and more choice in reading. Students are expected to be able to choose challenging, grade level appropriate texts when reading independently, and whole class texts will include strong academic (SAT) vocabulary. Reading is expected outside of class, with the student prepared to work with the day’s reading upon arrival in the class. Papers will be longer than in the Academic class, using student-discovered evidence throughout, and with few grammatical and usage errors.

Students in English 9 Honors will most likely move to English 10 Honors. Struggles in the English 9 Honors class, either in meeting the standards of the assignments or in the ability to independently pace themselves and meet deadlines may result in a recommendation for English 10 Academic, where more support can be provided.

Passing grades in English 9 Honors receive a 0.5 grade weight addition.
