English 12 Academic -
Students read representative literature from many cultures, countries, and time periods to increase their understanding of literature and the people who produced it. Activities include oral and written analyses of readings, overviews of the society and history that relate to a particular selection, and evaluations of author’s styles and themes. Students receive extensive writing practice in the expository, narrative, descriptive, and persuasive forms. Students review elements of style and study of paragraph development to prepare for more extensive assignments that follow. Students practice composing skills through the writing of critical and creative essays, description, narrative, persuasion, and exposition.
Note that this is a course that is designed to improve students’ writing and analytical skills across a number of disciplines, including the professional work environment.
English 12 Dual Enrollment -
LCPS provides students the opportunity to earn college credit while fulfilling their English 12 course requirement. English 12 Dual Enrollment (DE) is a rigorous, college-level course that focuses on composition, argumentation, and critical reading skills. It is a fast-paced course that covers two full semesters of college-level composition and reading. Students use non-fiction texts as models and fiction texts as the basis for argumentation.
English 12 DE is taught by LCPS teachers who are also adjunct faculty members at participating colleges.
English 12 Dual Enrollment involves two distinct semesters. Students must meet certain university mandated requirements in order to enroll in the class and must meet deadlines in Spring 2021 for enrollment in the Fall 2021 Semester. Students must maintain a C average in the class for the first semester to continue on to the second semester of the course. Those unable to do so will be moved in English 12 Academic at that time.
Students who pass the course with a "C" or better for semester one receive credit for English 111. Students who pass the course with a "C" or better for semester two receive credit for English 112.
Passing grades in English 12 Dual Enrollment receive a 1.0 grade weight addition.
AP Literature and Composition -
AP Literature and Composition is recommended for students who want a challenging course that emphasizes the study and practice of writing and the analysis of literature (prose, fiction, poetry, and drama). Students read a variety of works from several genres and cultures. Varied and frequent composition assignments require close reading, literary analysis, exposition of ideas, and the understanding of particular literary forms and terms. Students have the opportunity to take the AP Literature and Composition exam in May with the possibility of earning college credit.
Passing grades in AP Literature and Composition receive a 1.0 grade weight addition.
