English 10

English 10 Academic -

In Grade 10 oral language instruction emphasizes critique and analysis as well as participation in small group learning activities. The reading and literature component includes a selection of British literature and world literature influenced or responding to British literature. Students will also read a variety of nonfiction pieces. Writing instruction pinpoints expository composition and the ability to critique and analyze professional and peer writing.Direct vocabulary instruction improves students’ reading and writing fluency and prepares them for the SOL, SAT, and ACT tests. Students are taught to collect, organize, and present information in a documented research project.

Students will most likely move into English 11 Academic, but may be recommended by the teacher for English 11 Honors. Exceptional students may be recommended for AP Language and Composition, but see the course description regarding the unique challenge this presents.

English 10 Honors -

In English 10 Honors, novels will be longer and more complex than in English 10 Academic. Honors students are given more choice and freedom of expression in their work, but are expected to meet higher standards. Discussions in English 10 Honors will require students to express their opinions and support them with evidence from a variety of sources.

Students in English 10 Honors will most likely move to English 11 Honors or AP Language and Composition (see below for differences). Struggles in the English 10 Honors class, either in meeting the standards of the assignments or in the ability to independently pace themselves and meet deadlines may result in a recommendation for English 11 Academic, where more support can be provided.

Passing grades in English 10 Honors receive a 0.5 grade weight addition.
