My page is about what the #BlackLiveMatter means for people of colour like me, how it helped gain influence on social media and how the recent controversy of George Floyd’s death reignited the hashtag. On my page, I talk about how the BLM movement is taking over nationwide and worldwide, and what that means to me as a person of colour in this society. I am interested in looking into the impact of the BLM movement for the lives of people of colour.
My name is Josianne. I'm 24 years old and I go to Place Cartier. I choose this topic because it matters to me personally as a women of colour and it is very important to learn about this topic because it a serious matter. The media helps us to pass the message of need for equality and safety to the whole world and we hope that one day this message will be understood and everyone can support each other to better understand each other.
#BlackLivesMatter was founded on July 13th 2013 by Alicia Garza, Patrisse Cullors, Opal Tometi in the United States and its purpose was to build knowledge and protest against racial discrimination. The BLM movement has been around for a while but only recently we have seen a lot more around the world. For example, Trayvon Martin was shot and killed by his grandmother's neighborhood watch coordinator in 2013 and the movement #BlackLivesMatter started after George Zimmerman was acquitted. In 2020, George Floyd was killed by the police and Breonna Taylor as well causing the movement to be reignited on social media with the wide spread use of the hashtag.
Black Lives Matter to me because I am a person of colour in this society. I believe that this hashtag gave people of colour a voice where we don't feel that we are alone and we can speak out to the public. Even though we live in Canada, we are still not that diverse and, in my opinion there are still many people of colour who live in fear or feel that we are unliked and unwelcomed because our skin colour. This type of discrimination is something I face and also my family faces because we are all of colour. For example, my brothers and sisters and I fear that at anytime of the day we could maybe get killed just because the colour of our skin. I wish that one day we could be viewed the same as other cultures and feel the same as others, safe and respected for who we are. I just want us to feel the same as others.
I beleive that we all need to think about the BLM movement as more than a "trend" with the situation with police brutality. It is important for us to understand that a lot of people were using this unfortunate situation as a trend and this use of #Black Lives Matter hurts a lot of people of colour like me because this is my life everyday. Discrimination is based on a lack of undertsanding and of recognizing the difference between one thing and another. It can be defined as : "the unjust or prejudicial treatment of different categories of people or things, especially on the grounds of race, age, or sex."(Oxford Languages). In this circumstance, people of colour such as African Americans have been dealing with discrimination since the time of slavery. For us, it is not a trend but a daily reality that has serious, at times deadly, consequences.
In conclusion, I spoke of BLM because it's a very touching subject that touches millions of people around the world, especially Africain Amercains. I talked about how women of colour feel in our society today and how it sometimes feels that nothing has changed in the slightest for over 400 years. I strongly feel that our oppressors must be held responsible for their actions so that people around the world do not imitate the discriminatory actions by not not being educated. The discrimination in this world must be stopped so that we can all be treated equally and have the same basic human rights.

The reason why I chose this picture it's because it shows the union between us.
This picture really captures the essence of what black pride means.
This photo shows how I think it's time that as black people we document and tell our own stories particularly from our own perspectives.
This picture just shows us that for many of us, the movement represents love, a fight for freedom and justice.
This picture represent police brutality and free murders towards the black community.
This picture shows that our black community is strong, it is diverse, but most importantly it is grounded in love.
