As a board member, we set an example to others and need to be mindful of how we represent the league. This includes how we speak to refs, captains and players, how we talk to external sponsors, and how we interact with fans. We are in the public eye, and anything we say or do can impact the organization's reputation. We trust that everyone on the board can be a positive representative of the league in general and for any external communications.
Board Members are expected to uphold the following qualities in their conduct:
Integrity & Ethics. Demonstrate the highest levels of integrity and ethical behavior on and off the field. Even if you participate in the league (player, ref, sub, etc.), remember that you are always representing the board.
Practice Organizational Values. Ensure that the organization's practices reflect its values and the public's trust, and maintain a positive image of the organization.
Professional Behavior. Maintain professional conduct when interacting with community members, partners, or the public on behalf of the organization.
Ambassadorship. Act as ambassadors for the organization, enhancing its public image, networking, and advocating for its mission, vision, and needs.
Engagement. Attend activities and events sponsored by Lavender League whenever possible.
A conflict of interest arises when an individual’s personal, financial, or professional interests interfere or appear to interfere with their ability to act in the best interests of Lavender League.
Examples include:
A personal financial interest in a company that does business with Lavender League.
A family relationship with someone who benefits from decisions made by Lavender League.
Participation in external activities that could influence or appear to influence Lavender League's decisions.
Individuals must disclose any potential or actual conflicts of interest to the entire board as soon as possible. Depending on the nature and severity of the conflict, individuals may be required to recuse themselves from decision-making processes related to the conflict.
Lavender League Board Members are asked to be actively mindful of their personal relationships with individuals in the league's community.
Board members are allowed to hold multiple roles in the league, such as player/teammate, captain, or referee, and may have romantic relationships and friendships with individuals in the league. However, board members must be cognizant of and consider any power dynamics and biases that may arise. Bias can show up in many ways, both big and small. Hold yourself and other board members accountable when it comes to your interactions with others and in the community.
Here are some examples of situations in which power dynamics can become relevant:
Talking to the referee during a game or questioning their calls
Being present when league gossip occurs
Being privy to feedback or criticism about your team or someone you know personally
If any situation occurs that involves individuals with whom you are personally connected, always be mindful of potential bias and whether you are able to treat the situation with fairness and neutrality.
Board members have access to a lot of confidential information. We all have a responsibility to keep this information private - under no circumstances should we be sharing private information with anyone outside of leadership.
Board Members are expected to uphold the following confidentiality policies:
Protect Sensitive Information. Strictly maintain the confidentiality of all privileged or sensitive information in order to safeguard the organization’s reputation and integrity, as well as the privacy rights of individuals and donors connected with the organization and the Board.
No Expiration. Understand that this principle is one that should survive the period of board service.
Privacy of Personal Information. Maintain confidentiality of sensitive content discussed at board meetings and maintain the privacy of fellow board members’ personal information.
Public Comments. Speak for the board or the organization only when authorized to do so via a quorum of the board.
