Board Members are expected to commit to embodying the following organizational qualities:
Mission-driven. Every strategy, decision, and action should be taken with our mission in mind. Board members and volunteers are passionate and committed to the cause, which motivates their work and dedication.
Collaborative. We prioritize teamwork, partnership, and shared decision-making. We have a flat non-hierarchical organizational structure to facilitate open communication and collaboration across levels. We value the input and involvement of everyone in the organization to achieve common goals.
Anti-Oppressive. We actively acknowledge, address, and work to dismantle systems of oppression both within the organization and in its external actions and relationships. This involves creating an environment that promotes equity, inclusivity, and justice for all individuals, regardless of their race, gender, sexuality, ability, socioeconomic status, or other identity markers.
Innovation and Learning. We encourage experimentation, innovation, and continuous learning. We are open to taking calculated risks and learning from failures to improve our work. We invest in training and development opportunities for the board, referees, players, and volunteers. We commit to ongoing education about the organization's mission, the sectors it operates within, and the broader environment in which it exists.
Community Focused. We work closely with community members, valuing their input and fostering strong, respectful relationships. We emphasize inclusivity, diversity, and cultural sensitivity. Our organization is built on community feedback, we integrate community input in all our decision making.
Accountability. We emphasize ethical practices, transparency, and responsibility in all aspects of the organization's work.
Supportive Environment. We prioritize the well-being, development, and support of board members and volunteers. We recognize the potential for burnout in mission-driven work and promote breaks for mental health. We approach our differences with openness and a willingness to seek solutions.
Board Members are expected to uphold the following qualities in their conduct:
Promote DEI. Promote diversity, equity, and inclusion within the board and the organization as a whole, ensuring that a range of perspectives is considered in decision-making.
Engrain Racial Equity. Integrate a racial equity lens into project planning and evaluation.
Diversify Leadership. Suggest and/or support nominees to the board who bring a diverse perspective/experience and who can make significant contributions to the progress of the organization.
