This term, Year 5 has thoroughly enjoyed exploring the wonders of Space. We began by examining the structure and function of the Solar System, discovering how each new finding expands our understanding. In our first week, the children created a giant papier-mâché Solar System as a provocation, which sparked their excitement for becoming astronomers and investigating the mysteries of space.
Following this, the children conducted research on the planets and loved interacting with our homemade Solar System in the school hall. Starting from the Sun, they traveled to each planet, exploring its unique characteristics. This hands-on experience inspired them to produce impressive double-page spreads in their books.
Our next line of inquiry focused on how the Solar System functions. We explored the concepts of day and night, and why the Sun appears to move across the sky. This led to learning about time zones across the globe and using digital measuring tools to calculate distances between different zones. The children enjoyed making sundials, which they used in the playground to tell the time. By applying their geography and maths skills, they accurately calculated the time in countries like China and New Zealand based on our local time.
We then delved into the theme of ‘how discoveries are interconnected with our knowledge of space.’ The children learned about Mae Jemison, the first African-American woman in space, and wrote outstanding biographies inspired by her achievements and contributions.
In Art, we explored the work of Peter Thorpe. The children began by researching his art and practising the techniques needed to work with acrylic paints. Using Chromebooks, they planned their final pieces before creating vibrant works inspired by Thorpe’s distinctive style.
To showcase their learning, the children designed their own Solar System websites, with each page dedicated to a specific line of inquiry. These websites highlighted their creativity and understanding of the topic.
To wrap up this fantastic term, Year 5 also prepared and performed a magical nativity play in French. This was a delightful way to revisit the origins of Christmas and get into the festive spirit.
What a wonderful learning journey it has been!
