Dear Parents and Carers,
It has been a brilliant term for the LAB community and there is much to celebrate. Our students are consistently living our LAB values and showing up with ambition, resilience, scholarship, integrity, and respect.
This year, our students have been engaging with the following activities to help support their academic learning and personal development:
Homework Club
Attendance to our KS3 homework club and KS4 Mentoring and supervised study sessions have been growing in participation and engagement since January. This is helping support our students with their learning and contributing to LAB ranking consistently in the top of all Trust schools for Seneca Learning, Bedrock Vocabulary, and Tassomai.
Goldsmith’s Student Teacher Panel
Some of our students participated in a student teacher panel, in which they spoke openly about the challenges they face and strategies they use to help them overcome any barriers to accessing education. The student leaders gained a huge amount from understanding the experience of our learners and have taken this into shaping their professional development.
Power 2 Thrive Programme
A number of our students have begun a 12 week mentoring programme, in which they learn how to work effectively as mentors and gain a qualification after their successful completion. The feedback from both the provider and the primary school has been overwhelmingly positive:
“Everyone was a star today - supporting with phonics/ PE activities/ free play/reading/ writing. Some of the slightly quieter students are really taking initiative, and growing in confidence already”
“Our workshops are running smoothly - the young people engaged in a 'See & Say' feedback session, learning about interpersonal skills, role play activities and book work about interpersonal skills. They are all engaging well with the workshops.”
They have all passed their first round of assessments and we are seeing them take increasing responsibility at school. We are very proud of how they are developing and how they are representing our academy.
Interventions:
We currently provide a wide range of interventions to help 80+ students work towards specific learning, social, sensory and emotional targets. Our intervention offer includes social thinking, speech and language therapy, travel training, literacy support and drawing and talking. Below is an image of some of our students exploring their feelings whilst creating personalised art projects.
Easter Celebration
The lovely LSA team put together an Easter event to celebrate the hard work and effort demonstrated by our SEND students in this module. Their resilience and ambition was rewarded with an arts and craft activity and some delicious treats following an Easter egg hunt.
