Dear Parents and Carers,
It is hard to believe that we are already over halfway through the academic year. During Modules 3 and 4, our Airy College community has continued to thrive as we come to the end of yet another busy and exceptional term.
Airy College currently stands at 94.1% attendance for the year so far. 7C and 7F are leading the way with 96.2% attendance since September. The top tutor groups across Airy in all year groups are as follows:
8C – 94.4%
9F – 95.2%
10C – 95.9%
11C – 92.2%
Airy College ends Module 4 with a year-to-date attendance figure of 94.1%, which remains above the national average. However, there is still some work to do to reach our target of 95% across all tutor groups. We look forward to working hard together to meet that goal by the end of the year.
As you are aware, we celebrated World Book Day at LAB on Thursday 6th March. The Airy College staff and students once again did not disappoint, with fantastic efforts dressing up as their favourite book characters and enthusiastically joining in with all the activities. It was great to see so many students and staff participating in this annual celebration. Can you guess the Airy College staff theme this year?
During the week of 24th–28th February, and in line with ‘International Mother Tongue Language Day’, students and staff from across LAB celebrated culture and diversity through a wide range of activities. On Thursday 27th February, the LAB community marked the occasion by wearing cultural dress. This continues to be one of the highlights of the LAB calendar each year!
As you will have seen from other pages of this newsletter, we were extremely proud of yet another phenomenal whole-school production. This year’s performance of Mary Poppins was a fantastic showcase of LAB’s creative and inclusive culture. We were especially proud to see so many Airy College students involved.
A special thanks goes to Miss Coupe and the Arts Team for their hard work and dedication, and a special mention to Airy students:
Joe P (8C), Lindsey A (8C), Isabella H (8C), Divine A (7C), Imogen SL (7C), Finlay B (8C), Evan B (7C), Zac C (8C), Giovanna DCB (8C), Leo F (9C), Tre F (8C), Tomas H (9C), Aria R (8F), Florence S (8F), Nayanika S (9C), Oliver S (9C), Seb (8C), and Kayden (8C).
Week commencing 24/03/25 was Neurodiversity Week—an important opportunity to raise awareness and appreciation for the unique strengths and perspectives of neurodivergent individuals, including those with autism, ADHD, dyslexia, dyspraxia, and other learning differences.
A huge thank you to our brilliant SEND department—especially Airy HLTA Mr Evans—who led assemblies throughout the week and who work tirelessly to support our neurodivergent students. Their dedication helps ensure that every child at Leigh Academy Blackheath has the opportunity to thrive in a supportive learning environment.
A huge well done to 9F for achieving the highest merit total across the college with 5,258 merits, closely followed by 7C (5,258 merits) and 8F (4,895 merits).
This module, Year 10 students completed their first round of GCSE PPE mock exams. We were very proud of how mature and committed they were. Year 11 students also undertook further PPE exams and participated in after-school and half-term interventions as we continue the countdown to the formal exam period. It has been wonderful to see how positively most Year 11 students have engaged with the challenge and shown real dedication to their studies.
We were extremely proud of all students during our recent Challenge Partners Review for their continued hard work and commitment to learning. A special shout-out goes to Joe P (8C) and Ishan B (7C) for being part of the student team that presented our area of excellence to the review team and to the LAB Governing Body. We were all so impressed with how articulate and passionate they were about our KS3 curriculum.
LAB and Airy College are also delighted to share that Nathan D (9F), a member of our LAB Student Government, has been elected by his peers to serve on the Greenwich Young People’s Council. We are incredibly proud of him and look forward to hearing about the great work he will do over the coming year.
Each module, we celebrate students who have gone above and beyond. Students who consistently demonstrate the LAB values—Ambition, Integrity, Resilience, Scholarship, and Respect—are recognised and celebrated by our college community. Each week, tutors nominate one student from their group, and the wider Airy College team votes for the winner.
Each nominated student receives LAB Ambassador merits, and all are celebrated in our virtual assemblies with the reasons for their nominations shared.
Below is the list of students from Modules 3 and 4 who were selected as Student of the Fortnight:
7C – Mary D, Elizabeth P, Brody L

We continue to work with students and parents/carers to encourage responsible digital behaviour. While we expect students to live our values at all times, we cannot supervise student activity on social media outside of school hours. We therefore ask all parents and carers to monitor their child’s use of social media, particularly in relation to interactions on these platforms.
As I’m sure you’ll appreciate, unkindness on social media can impact relationships in school and negatively affect teaching and learning.
For more guidance on monitoring your child’s social media use, please visit:

If you would like further advice or support in this area, please do not hesitate to contact the Academy.
Finally, we would like to thank all members of our community—both at school and at home—for your continued support. We look forward to welcoming students back after Easter for the start of Module 5.
A reminder that the return date is Tuesday 22nd April 2024, at the usual time.
Please ensure that all students return with the correct equipment and in full LAB uniform, including black school shoes. If you need further details or clarification, please see the Academy website.
On behalf of the Airy College staff, we wish you all a very enjoyable and restful Easter break.
