Moving schools from Primary to Secondary can be daunting for every child. Our SEN department at LAB is instrumental in providing additional support to students at this time of change in their lives. I have spoken to a number of our year 7 students about what they love about our SEN department here at LAB. Many of our year 7 students utilise support from learning support assistants in their lessons, here are some comments from students
“Mr B is so funny in lessons. He always puts the fun into my lessons.” - BB
“I like the sen teachers because they are nice to me and understand me.”- BP
The SEN department also run a number of interventions during the week attended by lots of Year 7 students, such as word aware, ASDAN and zones of regulation, just to name a few.
“I like my interventions because they help to learn social skills” - AA
“I love travel training every week as I get to go out of school and learn more about dangers of the road and how to travel around safely” - AA
“I love how people care about what I have to say, and helping me with my feelings. I needed this help transitioning from primary school. I always thought that the school was going to be about big kids, but actually everyone has been so nice to me and make funny jokes” - SK

Following the successful training for both KS3 Students and Parents, Read&Write software has been explained and demonstrated for use both at school and home. The amazing software has been embraced by our SEN students and is being used on a daily basis to aid their learning. Please find some links below to provide further information about Read&Write if you were unable to attend the sessions, or are interested in the software yourself:
What is Phonics?
Phonics is one method of teaching children how to read and write commonly used in Primary schools across the UK. . Children learn the 44 sounds in the English Language, which we can put together to form words. Some of these sounds are represented by one letter, like ‘T’, and some by two or more, such as ‘CK’ in duck and ‘air’ in chair.
Every child is individual and they will be at different stages in their phonics and subsequent reading journey depending on their age and ability. Here in SEN at LAB We have been supporting those students who have struggled with their phonics journey so far. We re-teach the sounds first, how to match them to letters, and then how to use the letter sounds for reading and spelling. This is then used to support students with the star reader programme enabling them to develop their reading age.

Certificate of Personal Effectiveness Level 1 and 2
Within this course some of our KS4 students have been taking part in a scheme run by Greenwich Local Authority called Travel Training.
Tasks include becoming aware of the speed of transport in the local area, road safety and general awareness of risk prevention in the local community. Watch out drivers as we have been tracking your speed outside our school!!
