A particular well done to Year 7 Airy students who have made a fantastic start to their LAB journey. They have transitioned extremely well from primary school and have been demonstrating the LAB values in their day to day habits. They have shown phenomenal growth in the past few months and are fully integrated into the Airy community.
Our Year 11 students have shown impressive dedication in the most recent round of mock examinations. Equally, our Year 10 students have shown commitment and a mature approach to their GCSEs. It has been wonderful to see how positively students across both year groups have engaged with the challenge and dedication to their studies.
As you are aware we continue to have a drive on attendance and punctuality at LAB. Recognition should be given to all for their resilience in achieving such good levels of attendance over the past two modules. Airy college attendance ends Module 2 with a year to date attendance figure of 94%.
A special mention to the following tutor groups that already regularly have over 95% attendance:
7C - Mr Slade
7F - Ms Skondra
9C - Mr Warren
So many fantastic achievements, and we know this is just the tip of the iceberg! We are extremely proud of all of our Airy students - if your child has achieved something outside of class, please do get in touch with us so that we can share their successes too.
Events
The past two modules have been extremely busy with lots of events and co-curricular opportunities. Some highlights include: Culture Day, Black History Month, Remembrance Day, Winter Showcase, Art Exhibition, Ice Skating, Save the Children Christmas Jumper Day. Please check out our subject pages for more information.
Minds Up
We have been working with the charity ‘Minds Up’ to deliver bespoke workshops to our LAB students. This is a direct response to the ever increasing mental health concerns for our students as it continues to be the most reported concern at LAB. Minds Up will continue to work with LAB students into the new year. All LAB students will have taken part in the workshops by the end of the academic year.
During Module 2, workshops took place with all of our Year 11 students at LAB. The workshops focused on exam stress and resilience to support exam success. We were extremely proud of our Airy Year 11 students when they took part in the workshops; they were mature and very engaged in discussions regarding support strategies.
Further information about the impressive work Minds Up have been doing in schools.
Greenwich Food Bank collection and support for families
Our wonderful LAB Government has been busy promoting the Greenwich Food Bank collection - a huge thank you to all staff and students that have donated. Our collection will be supporting families across the borough.
If you would like more information and support for organisations and charities during this unprecedented time, please see our wellbeing pages for links and information on the local offer during the Christmas period.
Mobile Phones and Digital Safety:
We continue to remind students and parents and carers regarding digital safety. As you are aware, mobile phones are not permitted to be used on site. If seen, they will be removed, and parents or carers will be called to collect. Should a child need to contact home during the day due to an emergency, they should speak to one of the SSMs (Student Service Managers).
Following our previous letters and updates in LAB weekly, we continue to stress the importance of students using social media appropriately. Social media platforms such as Snapchat, Facebook, X, TikTok and Instagram have had a big impact on the way in which we communicate and express thoughts and opinions. Students can sometimes find these platforms difficult to navigate and unfortunately, we have been made aware of some unkindness on year group Whatsapp and Snapchat groups, by some students. We would like to take this opportunity to highlight the importance of families monitoring their child's social media use. Whilst we are not directly responsible for your child’s interactions on social media, we are of course invested in their wellbeing. We would ask, therefore, that all parents/ carers continue to monitor their child’s use of social media and discourage any involvement in whatsapp groups. We would also remind parents and carers that, There is a reason why Snapchat, Facebook, X, TikTok and Instagram have an age restriction of 13. As of 2018, the minimum age of use for WhatsApp in the UK is 16 years old.
For more information on how to monitor your child’s use of social media, please visit: www.nationalonlinesafety.com/hub. Please contact your child’s tutor if you have any concerns.
