Dear Parents/Carers,
As we approach the end of our very first term, I am excited to share the journey our 6th form students have embarked upon in our inaugural year of LAB16. The enthusiasm and dedication of our students have been inspiring, and I am very proud of their achievements. Here are some highlights of their first term:
Induction Week in Kent
Early in September, our year 12 students delved into the LAB16 experience with a week-long Induction Programme in Kent, run in collaboration with the National Citizenship Service. This immersive experience set the stage for a year of academic and personal growth. Students not only bonded over team-building activities but also laid the foundation for their service-oriented projects, forging connections that will see them through their time at LAB16.
Diverse Extracurricular Engagements: Sports, Language, and Mentoring
LAB16 students showcased their commitment to the community through a wide range of extracurricular activities. From running clubs such as animation and art for younger students to mentoring Year 11 GCSE students, participating in sports clubs, and even learning sign language, our students have embraced a well-rounded approach to personal development.
IB Diploma and IB Careers-related Programme begin
Our students embarked on the International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma and IB Careers-related Programme, marking the beginning of a rigorous yet rewarding academic adventure. Year 12 Diploma students commenced the Theory of Knowledge course, laying the groundwork for critical thinking and exploration.
Meanwhile, our Career Related Programme students launched their Personal and Professional Skills (PPS) course, initiated their Language Development programme, and began planning their service learning activities—showcasing a commitment to holistic education that goes beyond the classroom.
Staff vs. Students Netball Match: A Friendly Rivalry
October brought an exciting Staff vs. Students netball match, where both teams showcased their skills and sportsmanship. In a closely contested game, the staff emerged victorious. Look out next term for the staff v students dodgeball match!
Inspiring Career Talks: Alison Philips, Editor of the Daily Mirror
Our students had the privilege of gaining insights into the world of journalism through a captivating talk by Alison Philips, the editor of the Daily Mirror. Ms. Philips shared her experiences and wisdom, providing invaluable guidance to those considering careers in journalism. Later in the term students met via webinar with the CEO of Ipsos Mori, Ben Page, to discuss ‘Career Hacks’ and starting a career successfully.
Assessments and Reports
In November, our students faced their first assessments in their DP subjects, marking a significant milestone in their academic journey. We eagerly anticipate their continued success, with reports scheduled to be released in January.
Festive Fun: Christmas Movie and Pizza Evening
As the term winds down, our students organized a delightful Christmas movie and pizza evening, bringing the festive spirit to LAB16. It was a fantastic opportunity for students to unwind, share laughter, and strengthen the bonds formed throughout the term.
Next term.....
Embarking on the Extended Essay
Simultaneously, students will commence their Extended Essay, a challenging yet enriching endeavour that mirrors the rigour of university-level work. This independent research project, spanning approximately 4000 words, encourages our students to delve into a subject of their choice, cultivating critical thinking, research skills, and a deeper understanding of their chosen topic.
Looking ahead to University
In the next term, our focus will shift towards preparing students for their journey beyond school, as we introduce them to the UCAS process. This step is pivotal in guiding our students towards their desired universities and courses. Following this some students will be visiting Gonville and Caius College, Cambridge, and all LAB16 students will attend a University and Careers Fair at the Tottenham Hotspur stadium. This event promises to be an enlightening opportunity for students to explore various academic and career pathways.
Theory of Knowledge Exploration
In the realm of Theory of Knowledge (TOK), students will be immersed in a thought-provoking exploration of knowledge within the Human Sciences, Technology, and the Arts. This module promises to ignite intellectual curiosity and foster an appreciation for the diverse ways in which knowledge is created, shared, and interpreted in these domains.
Personal and Professional Skills
In Module 3, the CP students will be looking at Geopolitics and the Media, specifically at the conflict in Gaza. Students will be exploring the media’s involvement in information distribution and the impact social media platforms ethically have on their audiences.
Reflective Project
This module CP students have looked at Research Methods in relation to AI. In Module 3 they will continue to look at sourcing of information and start to explore topics of interest for their projects.
As we reflect on this term's accomplishments, I would like to thank the LAB16 community—students, staff, and parents—for making this inaugural year truly exceptional so far. We look forward to the continued growth and success that the next term will undoubtedly bring.
Wishing you a restful holiday season and a fantastic start to the new term!
