Our central idea for this term is 'Democracy may have consequences for people and their role in society.'
Using the Key Concepts of Function, Connection and Change, the lines of inquiry we will explore are:
How different governments work around the world
How people's freedoms are affected by the type of government they live under
How people's race and gender has affected their ability to contribute to society over time
Year 6 were fortunate to hear from Mrs Hollis, who experienced the vote counting procedure at last year's general election. They learnt all about the different political parties, and how somebody gets to become Prime Minister. Mrs Hollis also shared her knowledge of what makes a vote that can and cannot be counted, and exactly how close this can be. It was an extremely informative talk and the children asked some fantastic questions.
Year 6 had two forest school sessions this term. They took part in a range of activities, including refurnishing the bug hotel, creating shelters, creating Christmas decorations and more. The children showed excellent resilience and determination when using challenging tools, and coping with the very poor weather.
Earlier this term, Year 6 were fortunate to receive a visit from some local scientists. They took part in an exciting STEM workshop, where they sequenced DNA, extracted DNA from a strawberry and had a 3D printing experience. It was such a unique experience, and the children asked some fantastic questions linked to possible uses of DNA. Thank you to the wonderful volunteers who spent some time with Year 6!
