TOTF (Theme of the Fortnight) is "Internet Safety"
We are very excited to be launching our participation in myON, a new digital platform which will allow our students unlimited access to thousands of enhanced digital books. This forms an integral part of our commitment to support home learning, to increase student engagement and to further develop reading skills in our students. As a Trust, we have invested in myON to support your child’s reading while we support your child while working from home.
myON is a digital platform which allows students unlimited access to thousands of enhanced digital books. Students can enjoy a wide range of genres and authors as well as informational texts. The platform personalises the reading experience by matching students reading level and interests to help find their next book.
Close-reading tools, including an embedded dictionary, text highlighting and audio also help to develop student engagement with reading.
As well as books, students also have access to age appropriate news articles all year round. These can also be translated into French and Spanish to support the close reading skills of our students.
myON will motivate students to become better and more confident readers as well as taking accountability for their reading growth.
This exciting platform allows pupils to dictate their own reading and learning journeys. Not only can they select books by their interests, but also by their age and ability.
As shown in the image, pupils don’t have to just select fiction books for fun. Pupils have access to a wide range of non-fictions texts as well that support subjects such as Maths, Science and MFL.
MyON has books from every genre to engage even the most reluctant readers including fiction, biographies, scientific texts, graphic novels and more. This will encourage our students to access the digital library of 7000 books and age-appropriate news articles all year round. The myON daily news articles can also be translated into French and Spanish to support the close reading skills of our students as well. Furthermore, the platform will also allow staff to remotely set reading and writing projects to develop pupil’s learning.
Whilst remote learning in these unprecedented circumstances, we understand the importance of pupils’ well-being and the benefits of reading upon this. It will not only relax pupils and give them an escape from reality, but it will ensure they are learning in a way they enjoy. Building on reading skills benefits all subject areas as well as general literacy.
The website is user-friendly with an app-like approach. We love how accessible it is. Pupils can access the reader through a web browser or using the myON app, which is available for iOS (better on an iPad than phone), Android, Chrome, and Kindle.
English teachers are able to track their classes and reward rewarding. This is both in quantity of words read but the challenges our pupils are setting themselves.
The digital books on myON’s online platform have optional scaffolds to support a child. With myON, you can have pages, sentences or words read to you. Moreover, you can also look up words you do not understand and highlight and annotate passages. Each book will contain discussion questions and writing prompts to support progress with reading and develop comprehension. This will encourage independence and expand vocabularies.
This is an exciting new digital Literacy platform and we would like to thank you in advance for your support in launching myON at The Hundred of Hoo Academy as we continue our journey to develop our pupil’s love for reading and books.
All year 7-12 students have had their accounts set up so they can now login into myON.
