Understanding the World



Past and Present

  • Children will be exploring their own immediate families as well as those of their friends.

  • Children will be able to name and talk about people who are familiar to them. For example; "I went swimming with Auntie Meg and my cousin Leo".

  • Children will be able to talk about familiar situations in the past. For example; previous holidays or transport. The will be talking about how they are similiar or different.

People, Culture and Communities

  • Children will be able to talk about celebrations that are important to themselves, as well as exploring celebrations of others in their class and local community.

  • Children will develop an understanding of what a community is and which communities they belong to.

  • Children will develop empathy and respect for all of their friends, discussing how we are all both different and similar.

  • Children will look at special buildings, including religious buildings, as well as key religious celebrations.

The Natural World

  • Children will explore plants, their features and how we can care for them.

  • Children will explore their bodies, senses and how important it is to care for them and make healthy choices.

  • Children will explore materials, naming them, sorting them as well as talking about them in their play.

  • Children will explore seasonal changes, talking about what they see around them and identifying their similarities.
