English

Year 1

Year 1 pupils have been learning about the seasons and how these change throughout the year. The children have looked at a variety of books to research the individual seasons and created simple sentences to describe what they might see, what they might eat and what they might do during each one. They also had ownership of how to present these facts, with some children choosing to write a non-fiction book and others creating a poster.

Year 2

In Year 6, pupils have been looking at different artists and their own unique styles. The children have begun to apply and develop these skills before attempting to recreate thier own . As part of our inquiry into artistic expression, we are writing a letter to a local dance teacher persuading her to come and deliver a workshop at the academy. We have been focusing on letter layout as well as what persuasive language we can use.

Year 3

In Year 3 this term, our central idea is "Environments can be expressed through art". The children have been writing setting descriptions and have also looked at what makes an amazing setting description, including commas, fronted adverbials, prepositions and using the five senses in our writing. We will be sharing our setting descriptions across both classes to celebrate the children's writing.

Year 4

In Year 4 this term, the children have been looking at how inventions have influenced human progress. As part of this, pupils have written a letter to a company, persuading them to buy an invention. We have looked at using a range of conjunctions using the acronym fanboys, and also at formal and informal writing styles and changing basic information into paragraphs.

Year 5

Our central idea is "Movement affects diversity". The children have been working hard to develop and apply their skills of modal verbs and using relative clauses in any order to structure a paragraph. Pupils have written a story about animal migration which uses their inquiry information to produce 'creative non-fiction'.

Year 6

In Year 6, the children have been looking at different myths about how the sun came to be due to us also looking at Light within our Science lessons.

Pupils started by reading and researching different myths from around the world, such as the Scandinavian myth about Hati and Skoll and how they chased Mani and Sol, who were driving the sun and the moon around the earth, as a punishment from the Gods. The children retold the stories through drama which acted as the basis for our plan, before writing their own version of one of the many myths we had learned about in class.

Inkeeping with the theme of Light, we have started to look at a Norwegian town called Tromso, which is a place that has Polar Days and Polar Nights. This will be the stimulus for our non-chronological report this week.

Reading

Reading for pleasure can play such an important in a child's development. This week saw KS1 launch their Reading for Pleasure assembly. Our Year 1 and 2 classes paired up and together shared a class story.
