Writing in the Early Years

This week we have welcomed 'Pip the Penguin' into our Early Years classes. Pip is our class postbox, where children can post their pieces of writing that they are most proud of. It has been lovely to see the children developing their love of writing, applying their phonic knowledge to their writing as well as talking about what the marks they are making mean to them.

Writing is a key skill for learning, and something that starts from a very young age. Playdough and scissor skills are key ways to support your child's fine motor muscles, that will in turn support them with their pencil control and development of writing skills. Within the Early Years we remind the children to use their 'froggy legs' to hold their pencil correctly. Please see a picture below to show the pencil grip we are aiming for.

To further support your child's formation of codes (letters) when writing, please see our alphabet mats, and letter formation rhymes that we use within the Early Years. These resources are available from Phonics International.
