Primary Years Programme

How is our teaching and learning organised?

At Langley Park Primary Academy, we teach the National Curriculum subjects through the transdisciplinary themes of the Primary Years Programme.  Here is a recap of the transdisciplinary themes that are the drivers behind our teaching and learning:

How We Organise Ourselves

An inquiry into the interconnectedness of human-made systems and communities; the structure and function of organisations; societal decision-making; economic activities and their impact on humankind and the environment.

Who We Are

An inquiry into the nature of self; beliefs and values; personal, physical, mental, social and spiritual health, human relationships including families, friends, communities and cultures; rights and responsibilities; what it means to be human

Sharing the Planet

An inquiry into the rights and responsibilities in the struggle to share finite resources with other people and with other living things; communities and the relationships within and between them; access to equal opportunities; peace and conflict resolution

Where We Are in Place and Time

An inquiry into orientation in place and time; personal histories; homes and journeys; the discoveries, explorations and migrations of humankind; the relationships between the interconnectedness of individuals and civilizations, from local and global perspectives

One theme is chosen each term and this theme will then be the focus for all teaching and learning.

How the World Works

An inquiry into the natural world and its laws; the interaction between the natural world (physical and biological) and human societies; how humans use their understandig of scientific principles; the impact of scientific and technological advances on society and the environment.

How We Express Ourselves

An inquiry into the ways in which we discover and express ideas, feelings, nature, culture, beliefs and values; the ways in which we reflect on, extend and enjoy our creativity; our appreciation of the aesthetic.

From Transdisciplinary Theme to a Central Idea

The children will then explore a 'Central Idea' through a transdisciplinary theme. These are universal statements that spark curiosity, challenge and motivate the children to learn and inquire.

Here are some examples of 'Central Ideas' that the children could explore in school:

Who we are:   'Changes happen as we learn and grow.'

Where we are in place and time: 'Transformations can occur through lifestyles.'

How we express ourselves: 'Imagination influences expression.'

How the world works: 'Inventions influence progress.'

How we organise ourselves: 'Interdependence requires cooperation.'

Sharing the planet: 'Ecosystems require balance.'

From Central Idea to the Teaching of the National Curriculum Subjects

All subjects areas are taught over the period of the term through an inquiry approach to teaching and learning.

Below are examples of our pupils learning through inquiry at our school:

If you would like to know more about our curriculum, please get in touch via the academy office so that a coffee and catch up session can be arranged which will focus on the teaching and learning at LPPA.
