Developing Mathematicians in the EYFS
Next week, we are looking forward to welcoming parents/carers into the EYFS classrooms to participate in some Maths learning with the children.
Seedlings - Thursday 23rd March at 2.30pm in the Nursery Classroom.
Apollo and Discovery Classes - Monday 20th March at 2.30pm in the Reception Classrooms.
As part of the workshop you will be able to view the different materials (manipulatives) that we use within the Early Years and across Key Stage One to support the children in developing a deeper understanding of early number.
Some key information about how we develop knowledge of number in the Early Years:
We don't rush ahead to count to larger numbers. Children develop a detailed and in depth knowledge of early numbers that will be the foundations for their later maths development. For example; children in nursery look at the different ways numbers are formed up to 5. Children in Reception look at the composition of these numbers up to 10 and then move onto numbers 11-20 during the Summer Term.
We use concrete manipulatives (objects) to start a child's understanding. Once this has been embedded we then move onto pictorial representations (drawings) then abstract (the written number within the Early Years).
We encourage children to develop their language skills and ability to express how they have found the answer to maths problems, using sentence stems. Examples of these are; "I know it is 5 because I took 2 away" or "8 is fewer than 10 because 10 has 2 more in it".
