Reading at home
Following requests from some parents and carers regarding how they can support comprehension at home, we have put together some questions for KS1 and KS2 that you can ask as you listen to your child read at home.
Children should be reading at home at least four times per week, with their reading records being signed by a parent/carer.
Comprehension Questions for Parents of KS1
Look at the front cover. What could the book be about?
Who is the main character?
Where is the story set?
Which is your favourite part? Why?
What was the funniest/worst/scariest part of the story?
Do you know what that word means?
What do you think will happen next?
How do you think the character feels? Why?
How would you feel if you were that character?
Why do you think the character did ________?
As you are reading what are you wondering about?
Do you have any questions about what you have read?
Tell me what has happened on that page/pages in your own words
What type of book is this Fiction (stories) or Non-fiction (factual books).
Can you find the heading/title of the page?
Can you find a subheading/title on the page?
Why is it organised like this?
Comprehension Questions for Parents of KS2
Who is the main character?
What is their character like? How do you know this?
What is the plot of the story?
What clues did the author use to help the reader predict what will happen?
Can you summarise the story in a few sentences?
What words help create a feeling or picture in your mind?
How is the setting important to the story?
How is the setting described? Find three words which are used to describe the setting.
Did any of the characters change during the story? Why do you think this happened?
What do you think might happen next? What in the text tells you this?
Does your opinion of the characters change throughout the story? How? Why?
Can you retell the story in your own words?

How is the text set out for us to find the information easily?
What is the purpose of this book? How do you know?
How can you find out the meaning of unfamiliar words? Why are they used in this book?
What have you learned from the text? Can you recall three facts?
