This term has seen the children grow even more into the hard working, caring and thoughtful young people they are going to be in the future.
By looking at our central idea, which was focused on conflict, we chose to dive into three elements of World War II: The Blitz; The Battle of Britain and The D-Day Landings. The children have thoroughly enjoyed learning about the specific elements that led to certain battles.
Our first piece of work looked at the devastation that was the Blitz. We explored how people in Britain protected themselves and how children had to move away from home in order to stay safe. The children also looked at the statistics that made up the Blitz, from the amount of casualties to the number of bombs dropped.
From that, we began looking at the Battle of Britain. We were lucky enough to attend the Battle of Britain Memorial in Folkestone. This ignited the children's interest in the battle and when we returned to school to write about the various factors that meant the British were able to push back the Luftwaffe from the coast, they were ready to spill everything they had learned.
To finish off the term, we learned about the D-Day landings. We discussed the importance of the operation and how it was known as the 'turning point of the war'. The children learned about the defences along the beaches of Normandy and the magnitude of the planning that the British underwent. We watched an animation that depicted the landings and then we re-told that story.
This term, the children sat another set of mock SATs papers and it is clear to see how much progress the children have made over the last 6/7 weeks, since our last set of mocks. We are extremely proud of the children. A well deserved Christmas break we feel.
In science, the children have been learning about evolution and inheritance. They were fascinated about the genes that we inherit from our parents. We also looked at early man and the evolution of humankind. In geography, we focused on North and South America and the natural and human geography of lots of different locations within the continents.
Well done everyone! Enjoy your winter break!!!
