Autumn Term Newsletter #4
3rd October 2025
Dear Parents and Carers,
It has been a productive week in school as we all continue on our learning journeys. There have been lots of discussions about all that we do throughout school: the JLT met with each class to get their feedback; the School Board met last night to review outcomes from last year and hear about our priorities for 25/26; and Sarah King and Chris Marks joined the leadership team yesterday to complete the School Review. All of these interactions help us to recognise success and gain greater clarity about our next steps as a school.
Values: This week has seen us focus on empathy. In assembly on Monday, we explored the idea of being detectives to recognise how others might be feeling so we can offer help and support. The values champions in assembly today were recognised for their empathy and it was lovely to hear of the different ways this happens in school: routines - checking on others every day, assistance - with shoelaces, reflection - considering how our own actions impact others. Next week, our value is appreciation as we give thanks for what we have.
Harvest Collection: On Monday, we are asking families to donate items to support our local foodbank. The items most urgently needed are listed here on their website. Last year we collected over 700 items which was incredible. Let's try to better it this year. Children can drop their donations into the foyer on their way into school on Monday morning.
Votes for Schools: Black History Month began this week with a focus on the fashion industry as we considered 'Can fashion teach us about Black History?' (KS2) and 'Do your clothes show who you are?' (KS1). Class sessions discussed recent fashion weeks and some of the designers before moving to explore historical clothing items.
Arbor App / Parents' Eve: The only way to book parents' evening slots is via the Arbor App. Booking will go live from 8pm on Friday 10th October. Download the app to avoid missing out. Simply click the link here and click Forgot your password? to set up your account. Support can be found here.
Flu Vaccinations: A reminder that parents must respond to say if they want their child vaccinated or not. Vaccinations will take place on Thu 9th Oct.
As always, there is a lot going on in town: Watford Palace Theatre need your help to find out where the giant has been shopping in town. You can find out more here and there is a chance to win a family ticket to the pantomime later this year; Watford African Caribbean Association has events happening all month to celebrate Black History Month; there is also the battle of the fords at Vicarage Road as Watford take on Oxford. Whatever you choose to do, have a great weekend.
Best wishes,
Mr. Matt Morey - Headteacher

Children’s attitude to learning has been recognised through the collection of dojo points, which are then totalled as house points across the school. Every child continues to show their commitment to being Ready, Respectful and Resilient, earning points for their house. Each half term the points are reset and a new competition begins. This week Curie have retained the lead but the gap is down to just 4 points. Congratulations to everyone involved. Every point represents a moment of success this term.
Here’s how the points stand:
1st: Curie with 1701 points (+406 points this week)
2nd: Carver with 1697 points (+411 points this week)
3rd: Alhazen with 1693 points (+415 points this week)
4th: Sharman with 1645 points (+443 points this week)
Let’s keep up the great work and continue to support each other as we aim for the top!
Class News
In Reception, we have been learning about the harvest festival. The children have learned what happens during the festival and why it is celebrated. We have looked at harvesting on the farm and how we can use ingredients collected from farms to make food. We have also looked at the season of autumn which is when the festival is celebrated. In maths, we have looked at repeating patterns and have created patterns of our own.
This week in Year 1 English, the children have begun to internalise the story Handa’s Surprise. To help us remember the sequence of events, we worked together to recall the story and put the pictures in the correct order. The children really enjoyed retelling the story and showed great memory and sequencing skills.
This week in Year 2/3, we have been exploring the use of colour in Art. The children chose a favourite artwork from a selection of artists and recreated swatches of the colours used in their chosen piece. This activity gave them the chance to experiment with colour, observe how artists use different shades, and express their own creativity.
Year 4 has had a fantastic week of learning! In English, children have been gathering ideas to innovate their model text and have come up with some wonderfully creative storylines and imaginative settings — we’re excited to see how their writing progresses. In Geography, Year 4 explored the path of the River Thames, tracing its journey from source to mouth. They labelled key features along the river’s course, including the major cities it flows through, and discussed how the river’s use and significance have changed over time.
This week, the whole Viking fleet sailed over to Rio and Cusco! As part of our Vikings unit in History, children were challenged to create their own longboat models at home. The creativity, design, and careful execution blew us away — the Viking longboats were absolutely incredible and are now proudly on display in both classrooms. (Well... all except for one made of cake!)
Well done to all the children who put in such fantastic effort — and a big thank you to parents and carers for supporting this task at home.
This week, Year 6 have been exploring how plants can be classified. They began by identifying similarities and differences between a range of plants and used this knowledge to ask thoughtful questions that helped them sort and group them effectively. The children were then introduced to the key features of flowering and non-flowering plants, and were fascinated by the variety found in each category. After collecting a few samples to examine closely, they worked hard to summarise their learning in their books, using diagrams and key vocabulary to show what they’d discovered.
We reviewed the new history and geography curriculum content that we are implementing this year. We also explored a range of teaching strategies and task designs that can be used to ensure that learning is more memorable and interactive.
Friends of Lanchester
We hope you’ve had a great week and are back into the swing of school life.
Pre-loved uniform
If you’ve already lost a jumper or two, don’t forget about our pre-loved uniform.
We have lots of uniform in all sizes and it’s simple to buy and collect. All you need to do is:
1. Go to: www.uniformerly.co.uk
2. On the side menu go to FIND MY SCHOOL and follow the instructions. You will be asked to select Local Authority (HERTFORDSHIRE), followed by School (LANCHESTER COMMUNITY FREE SCHOOL). You will then be able to see the available items.
3. Click on the item to find out what sizes are available and how to purchase.
4. If you are interested in an item/items, you need to register to send a message through the website. You will then be in contact with the PTA to confirm the size required and when it will be available to pick up at school.
Thank you to Helen L who has been amazing at keeping it all running and sorting the massive load of donations!
We’ll also have a range available during the last week of term and at Parents Evening.
Spooky bake sale and non uniform day
On Friday 24th October, we’ll be holding a spooky Autumn bake sale. We’d love to see your beautiful bakes. Please drop off any cakes and treats on the morning of Friday 24th October and we’ll be selling them directly after school.
Children are also able to come in their own clothes in return for a voluntary £1 donation.
AGM
We’d love to see you on Thursday 16th October for our AGM. Join us in the Small Hall at 7pm for a glass of wine, vote in our trustees and help us plan our fundraising for the year.
If you would like to take on one of the roles of Chair or Co-Chair, Treasurer and Secretary, please come along. If you’re unable to attend but are interested in taking on a role, please let us know by emailingfriendsoflanchester@gmail.com
Christmas cards
It may seem a bit early but it’ll be here before you know it! Children will be designing their own Christmas cards in school and bringing the designs home for you to buy from a range of products like cards, mugs, keyrings.
It was really popular last year and we’re really excited to see the children’s designs this year! The children will hopefully be doing them in the next couple of weeks and you’ll be able to order from October.
