Autumn Term Newsletter #6
17th October 2025
Dear Parents and Carers,
Collaboration has been the theme of the week and it has been lovely to see it in action throughout school. Yesterday, our Primary Director, Sarah King, toured the school with me and we saw some incredible learning and excellent work in books. Many of the children spoke to Ms King with confidence and enthusiasm which was great to see. Collaboration continued into the evening with the Friends of Lanchester AGM. It was encouraging to see many new faces joining the team. Lastly, the Junior Leadership Team (JLT) have been brilliant role models supporting children in younger years and working with me to improve our dojo points (details coming soon!)
Values: This week our focus value has been collaboration. In assembly on Monday, I tasked the children with collaborating to look after our school grounds and resources. In Celebration Assembly, we heard of wonderful children who have put the needs of the wider community before themselves. Next week, our value is curiosity and the important role it plays in helping us to learn.
Votes for Schools: With COP30 coming up in November, our question this week has been 'Does climate change worry you?' The children explored a range of news articles about recent events (hottest UK summer, floods in Pakistan, machinery that traps harmful gas and AI weather prediction tools) before debating the question and forming their opinion.
Arbor App / Parents' Eve: Thank you for using our new booking system to book your appointments for next week. If you've not yet booked, slots are still available. Download the Arbor app to book your appointment. Follow this link and click 'Forgot your password?' to set up your account. Support can be found here.
Gardening: Next week, we welcome back Rachel from The Serge Hill Project who will be surveying our outdoor space and looking at ways to improve our garden spaces. She will also be back on Friday 7th November to work with the Eco Council. If you are green-fingered and keen to help, please email the school office and join us to make a positive difference to the school grounds.
Staffing Update: Unfortunately, Miss Murphy sustained a serious knee injury and will need surgery before she can return to work. We are in the process of securing another teacher to work with New York until her return. We wish her well and hope for a speedy recovery.
This weekend is the perfect time for a woodland walk with the colours of autumn at their peak. Whippendell Woods are so close to school or there is Chipperfield Common or Ashridge is you fancy a change of scenery. Whatever you choose to do, have a great time.
Best wishes,
Mr. Matt Morey - Headteacher

Children’s attitude to learning has been recognised through the collection of dojo points, which are then totalled as house points across the school. Every child continues to show their commitment to being Ready, Respectful and Resilient, earning points for their house. Each half term the points are reset and a new competition begins. This week Carver have gained the lead but the gap is narrow - only 61 points cover all four houses! It is all to play for as we enter the final week of the half term. Congratulations to everyone involved. Every point represents a moment of success this term.
Here’s how the points stand:
1st: Carver with 2884 points (+784 points this week)
2nd: Curie with 2876 points (+775 points this week)
3rd: Sharman with 2841 points (+776 points this week)
4th: Alhazen with 2823 points (+731 points this week)
Let’s keep up the great work and continue to support each other as we aim for the top!
Class News
This week in Reception, we have looked at the story 'Go Away, Big Green Monster', where we have focussed on descriptive language. The children have created their own monsters and verbally described their features. In maths we have looked at properties of circles and triangles and have explored positional language. The children have now been taught all of the set 1 single letter sounds in phonics, videos of the sounds taught are available on Google Classroom.
This week, the children have been exploring number bonds within 10. Using a fun toadstool activity, they were challenged to place 8 spots in different ways and discover all the possible number combinations that make 8. This hands-on task helped deepen their understanding of number bonds and encouraged mathematical thinking in a practical and engaging way!
Today, Year 2/3 enjoyed a special visit from a Stone Age expert! The children discovered what life was like from the Stone Age through to the Iron Age and had fun exploring history through artefacts, drama and even some cave inspired art.
We are incredibly proud of our Year 4 children for the effort and determination they've shown during their recent assessments. Their resilience, focus, and positive attitude have truly shone through – well done to each and every one of them! To celebrate their hard work and continue our learning in an exciting way, the children enjoyed a fantastic trip to Cassiobury Park as part of our Geography topic on rivers. The highlight of the day was a hands-on river workshop, where pupils explored the features of a river, investigated water flow, and discovered how rivers shape the land.
This week in Year 5, the children concluded a two-week-long Science project, marking the end of their first unit of the year: Earth and Space. They produced a non-chronological report on the topic, summarising all they have learned, including the order of the planets in the solar system, how the Earth's axis and spin produce day and night, and how its orbit leads to varying seasons. We are incredibly impressed with the work the children were able to produce over the two lessons.
In our Science lesson, we have explored the world of living things and their habitats, this time delving into the microscopic world of microorganisms. We will be investigating what can affect microbe growth over a period of a week. We collaborated in groups to set up our bread experiment, to see if light, temperature or if the surface the bread has touched can affect the amount of mould that can grow. We thought carefully about which variables we needed to change to ensure a fair test and make predictions as to what we think might happen!
The team had a productive session led by Mr Bristow who modelled to the teachers how our new assessment tool can be used. The software identifies specific gaps in childrens learning, enables staff to create groups with shared gaps and then resources the gap for the staff to teach. It is an excellent tool for improving outcomes. Staff have started to use it with maths and plan to expand it further into other areas of the curriculum.
It's hard to believe that next week is the end of this half term, it has flown by.
