Autumn Term Newsletter #3
26th September 2025
Dear Parents and Carers,
It has been a productive week in school with lots of excellent learning taking place. We have also taken many first steps on strategic journeys. On Monday, we had our first phonics development day with Jenny Rolnick from RWI. She provided excellent coaching and advice to the team which will help to improve our provision. Jenny will be with us each half term to ensure all children get the best possible start to their reading journeys. On Tuesday, I interviewed Year 6 children who wanted to join the Junior Leadership Team (JLT). They have some interesting ideas for the year ahead and spoke with confidence. The JLT received their badges in assembly today and I am optimistic about their impact. Today, Mrs Tang has been at Dehavilland Primary School collaborating with other writing leads to continue our writing journey.
Values: This week has seen us focus on kindness as part of our work exploring respect. In assembly on Monday, we considered the saying 'Be kind whenever possible. It's always possible.' Classes were challenged to build kindness chains with each link representing an act of kindness. These chains were celebrated in assembly today. Next week, our value is empathy as we learn to understand and respect others.
Votes for Schools: With the Enhanced Games in the news recently, our question this week has been: 'Is it ever ok to cheat?' in KS1 and 'Should sport always be fair?' in KS2. There were some excellent discussions in school, particularly around the role of cheating to lose so a younger sibling can win.
Y6 Parent Workshop (online): Mr Bristow will be holding an online meeting for Year 6 parents and carers on Wednesday at 6pm via Google Meet. The session will outline Year 6 expectations and provide information about our upcoming residential. This will also be a valuable opportunity to ask any questions you may have. We warmly encourage all Year 6 parents and carers to join.
Arbor App: The only way to book parents' evening slots in October. Simply click the link here and click Forgot your password? to set up your account. Support can be found here.
Flu Vaccinations: A reminder that parents must respond to say if they want their child vaccinated or not. Vaccinations will take place on Thu 9th Oct.
If you are staying indoors this weekend, England take on Canada tomorrow for the final of the Women's Rugby World Cup. If you fancy something different, St Albans might be worth a visit. The market is always lively and tomorrow is St. Alban's Morris Day of Dance with performances through the town centre. The Big St Albans Model Show is also happening at Townsend School. Whatever you choose to do have a great weekend!
Best wishes,
Mr. Matt Morey - Headteacher

Children’s attitude to learning has been recognised through the collection of dojo points, which are then totalled as house points across the school. Every child continues to show their commitment to being Ready, Respectful and Resilient, earning points for their house. Each half term the points are reset and a new competition begins. This week Curie have retained their 9 point lead at the top. Congratulations to everyone involved. Every point represents a moment of success this term.
Here’s how the points stand:
1st: Curie with 1295 points (+397 points this week)
2nd: Carver with 1286 points (+397 points this week)
3rd: Alhazen with 1278 points (+432 points this week)

Let’s keep up the great work and continue to support each other as we aim for the top!
Class News
Reception have been looking at the story of the Three Little Pigs. We have experimented with the different materials the pigs used and looked at why some of them aren’t good materials to build a house with. We have had a go at building our own strong houses to see if the big bad wolf (Miss Henney) could blow them down. In phonics, we have continued to learn the set 1 single letter sounds and our schools RWI coordinator was very impressed with the children’s learning when she visited on Monday. Miss Henney was very proud of the class for this feedback!
This week in Maths, Year 1 have been learning about greater than, less than and equal to. The children have been working in pairs to build number towers using cubes and number cards. Once their towers were complete, they worked together to decide which sentence matched greater than, less than or equal to. The children enjoyed the practical activity and it really helped them to compare numbers in a fun and engaging way.
This week in Maths, our Year 2/3 have been exploring place value and learning how to partition numbers up to 100 and 1000. The children have enjoyed lots of hands-on activities, using base tens and other resources to help them understand numbers in a fun and practical way.
In English, they explored fronted adverbials and relative clauses to make their writing more interesting, describing characters and settings that brought their stories to life. In Art, the classroom was full of colour and creativity! Using warm and cool colours, the children learned about complementary and tertiary colours, and had a go at mixing their own — an activity which they found both fun and fascinating. As always, we’re proud of their enthusiasm, curiosity, and hard work!
Year 5 pupils let their imaginations run wild this week as they each painted a mysterious puzzle piece—without knowing what the final picture would be. Guided only by their creativity and a splash of colour, each child contributed to a vibrant, collaborative artwork. The big reveal? A colourful cat! This fun surprise perfectly hooked the children into our next creative writing unit, Zelda Claw and the Rain Cat.
This week, Year 6 have been examining our model text, The Library, as part of their suspense writing unit. They explored how vocabulary choices and literary techniques can build tension and keep a reader hooked. The children enjoyed unpicking how the author created atmosphere and discussed how they could use these strategies in their own writing. Their readiness to analyse and experiment with language has set them up brilliantly for crafting their own spine-tingling suspense narratives in the weeks ahead.
We embarked on our 'Adaptive Teaching' training. We explored how we use use routines and feedback to establish a culture of high expectations in the classroom. Much of the excellent work we did last week on memorable teaching linked nicely and there were lots of reflective conversations about high-quality teaching.
