Autumn Term Newsletter #5
10th October 2025
Dear Parents and Carers,
It has been a busy week at Lanchester. Alongside the excellent learning in classes, we have had a Spanish Day today with children from five classes being immersed in a themed room. On Wednesday, the school nurses worked with Year 6 completing a national health and wellbeing survey alongside some workshops on healthy living. The nurses were also in administering flu jabs on Thursday. Please note: there will be a 'catch-up clinic' available in December if you did not consent this time. Lastly, Year 1 were busy in Cassiobury Park today as part of their science learning.
Over the last two days, I have been at the Hertfordshire Primary Headteachers Conference continuing my own learning journey. It has been an invaluable opportunity to hear from some excellent speakers, consider the journey we are on as a school and network with some experienced colleagues.
Values: This week our focus value has been appreciation. In assembly on Monday, we explored the story 'Stone Soup' and what it means to appreciate and support each other. This linked in well with our Harvest collection. Next week, our value is collaboration, as we explore the ways in which we work together in our school community and beyond.
Harvest Collection: On Monday, we were pleased to receive harvest donations from many of our families. These will be gratefully received by the Watford foodbank and will help to support those families in our community who need it most. Thank you to everyone who contributed.
Votes for Schools: With the launch of new legislation this week, we explored the question 'Do rules always help you feel safe?' Older children zoomed in to consider the impact of Respect Orders on helping us all stay safe.
Arbor App / Parents' Eve: A reminder that booking for parents' evening will go live tonight at 8pm (Friday 10th October). Download the Arbor app to book your appointment. Follow this link and click 'Forgot your password?' to set up your account. Support can be found here.
This weekend you can join 'Watford Diwali' happening throughout the town centre with lots of the action taking place at the pond at the top of town. Whatever you choose to do, I hope you all have a great time.
Best wishes,
Mr. Matt Morey - Headteacher

Children’s attitude to learning has been recognised through the collection of dojo points, which are then totalled as house points across the school. Every child continues to show their commitment to being Ready, Respectful and Resilient, earning points for their house. Each half term the points are reset and a new competition begins. This week Curie have retained the lead but the gap is now down to 1 single point! There are only two weeks left - who will finish on top? Congratulations to everyone involved. Every point represents a moment of success this term.
Here’s how the points stand:
1st: Curie with 2101 points (+400 points this week)
2nd: Carver with 2100 points (+403 points this week)
3rd: Alhazen with 2092 points (+399 points this week)
4th: Sharman with 2065 points (+420 points this week)
Let’s keep up the great work and continue to support each other as we aim for the top!
Class News
In Reception this week, we have looked at the story of Little Red Riding Hood. On Monday, we found a basket of treats left in our classroom and the children made signs to keep the basket safe. As a reward, Little Red Riding Hood shared her treats with the class as a thank you. In maths, we have been looking at composition of numbers 1, 2 & 3 and subitising these numbers.
This week in Maths, Year 1 explored the part–part–whole model in a fun and practical way! The children threw balls into one hoop to find the first part, then placed the balls that missed into a second hoop, to find the second part. Once both parts were found, they worked out the whole. The children then practised saying their maths sentences out loud, for example: “5 is a part, 1 is a part and 6 is the whole.”
This active learning helped to cement their understanding and made maths lots of fun!
This week in Year 2/3, we took part in an exciting Spanish Workshop! The children learned key Spanish words and phrases through fun, interactive activities. They explored aspects of Spanish culture, practised their speaking and listening skills, and joined in with engaging games and songs. It was a lively and enjoyable experience, and the children loved immersing themselves in a new language!
In Year 4 this week, the children have made a great start on their innovative texts in English, inspired by The Wild Girl. They are already showing creativity and enthusiasm in their writing. In Maths, we have been learning how to round numbers to the nearest 10, 100, and 1,000.The children are growing in confidence and enjoying the challenge.
In Art, we explored Aboriginal dot painting and created our own vibrant pieces. The children really enjoyed learning about this unique style and expressing their creativity through it.
Well done to all of Year 4 for a fantastic week of learning!
This week in Year 5, we continued to enjoy our class novel, Boy in the Tower by Polly Ho-Yen. The story has sparked curiosity and rich discussion, and the children are really engaging with the characters and plot. As we read, we are focusing on developing key reading skills: using context to understand new vocabulary, retrieving key information from the text, making inferences about characters and events, and predicting what might happen next. It's been wonderful to see the children so enthusiastic and thoughtful in their reading!
This week, Year 6 showcased their creativity and aspiration in art. Pupils began by experimenting with watercolour techniques to create vibrant, textured backgrounds. They then carefully sketched animals that complemented their painted designs - combining precision and imagination to produce truly striking pieces.
We are in our assessment window this week and the teachers were given time to mark and analyse the test papers. We have moved to a new system for assessments which will provide more precise details about the gaps in each individual child's learning. Mr Bristow will be leading training next week to help the team utilise this tool effectively.
We’d love to see you at our AGM next Thursday 16th October. Join us at 7pm for a drink, help us plan our fundraising for the next year and hear more about our committee roles.
