Students elect to study band instruments of their choice. In addition to large group rehearsals, students will be expected to attend a weekly lesson, and practice independently. Students perform in concert band and marching band, and may choose to perform in jazz ensemble and other extra musical activities.

Chorus is a performing ensemble consisting of singers in grades 9-12. Students learn the art of part singing and explore many styles of music through choral performance. Students learn the rudiments of singing, music theory, sight singing and aural skills. Students participate in regional and state festival events. A weekly small group lesson is required.
NOTE: While Band and Chorus classes only meet every other day, these also require lessons and musical performances throughout the year. This combination of requirements is what allows these courses to be worth a full unit of academic credit.
MUSIC APPRECIATION

Music Appreciation is a survey of musical style periods, Medieval through Contemporary. Representative composers and music from each period are listened to, discussed, and compared. Students learn a vocabulary with which to analyze music according to the elements of form, genre, style and instrumentation. Significant works will be placed in historical context, and students will learn how most music is a product of the time and place in which it originates. NO performances are required in this elective class.
MUSIC THEORY

Music Theory examines the various parts, or elements, of music - melody, harmony, rhythm and timbre, texture, form, and the ways in which these individual elements combine and interact to create a piece of music.
This course is an introductory course in the fundamentals of music which involves learning major and minor scales, key signatures, intervals, and triads. It also includes the study of time signatures, various rhythms, and note values through rhythmic and melodic dictations. Through this course of study, students will learn to analyze, synthesize and create music with an understanding of the various techniques used in western music.
