FRENCH I

Grade Appropriate: 9-10
French I covers a wide range of material from both French 7 and French 8. Students will be introduced to a variety of thematic vocabulary units and will explore the culture and geography of the French speaking world. Many hands-on projects and games will be used to expand student's knowledge of target language vocabulary and grammar.

Prerequisite: Passing grade on Proficiency Exam or in French I
Students will learn how to ask questions, respond to inquiries, as well as express needs, opinions, and feelings. A French II student will be building upon the grammar and vocabulary that they learned in French I. Units may include education, daily routine, seasonal activities, shopping, restaurants & cooking. The student will be communicating in French and will be learning to cope with, and react to a variety of everyday situations. There is a final exam at the end of the year.

Prerequisite: French II
Skills developed at the French III level are similar to that of French II, but include a wider array of vocabulary and mechanics. Topics expand the depth of those introduced in French II, but require more advanced proficiencies in reading, writing, speaking, and listening. This includes more grammar structures like imperfect, conditional and future tenses. Topics may include childhood, city/community, news events, accidents/hospital, hotel, and air travel. There is a final exam at the end of the year.

French IV is also offered as FRE 102 via North Country Community College. This course will build upon more complex grammar and themes beyond the scope of French 3. Independent reading in the target language, authentic news sources and music will be regular tools to expand on themes. We will explore geography, history, literature, film and cultures of the French-speaking world.

French V is also offered as FRE 201 via North Country Community College. French V is also offered as FRE 201 via North Country Community College. This course will build upon more complex grammar and themes beyond the scope of French 4. Independent reading in the target language, authentic news sources and music will be regular tools to expand on themes. We will explore geography, history, literature, film and cultures of the French-speaking world.
SPANISH I

Spanish I covers a wide range of material from both Spanish 7 and Spanish 8. Students will be introduced to a variety of thematic vocabulary units and will explore the culture and geography of the Spanish speaking world. Many hands-on projects and games will be used to expand student's knowledge of target language vocabulary and grammar.

Prerequisite: Passing the Spanish proficiency exam or Spanish I
A Spanish II student will be building upon the grammar and vocabulary that they learned in Spanish I. They will be learning much more vocabulary and verb mastery will be more of a focal point: present and preterite. Units may include education, daily routine, winter, clothes shopping, restaurant & cooking. The student will be communicating in Spanish and will be learning to cope with, and react to a variety of everyday situations. The student will be involved in oral comprehension, plus more reading and more complex writing.

Prerequisite: Spanish II
The material covered will be like those of Spanish I and Spanish II, but on an even more intricate level, which will require more advanced proficiencies resulting in a more interwoven combination of functions, situations, and topics as covered in the NY state syllabus. This includes more grammar structures like imperfect, conditional and future tenses. Topics may include childhoon, city/community, news events, accidents/hospital, hotel, and air travel. The final product is the same: that the student may communicate in Spanish, comprehend, read and write, and be exposed to more cultural aspects.

Students will have the opportunity to take this as a BRIDGE course with NCCC for college credit. This course will continue to past grammar points and build upon more complex grammar with projects and other activities.
