Studio in Art

1.0 credit (full year)

Grade Appropriate: 9–12

Students will learn about the elements of art and principles of design. These are key concepts used by artists in understanding and creating art. Studio work will be assigned which will allow the students to find out about a variety of media. The media used in this class will be varied. It will consist of developing skills with drawing media, painting, sculpture, and printmaking and computer software.

This is a prerequisite for any other art course at LPHS.


Studio in Drawing and Painting

1.0 credit (full year)

Grade Appropriate: 10-12

Prerequisite: Studio in Art

This is a full year elective course. Students will concentrate on developing skills in a variety of drawing techniques. Students will be given an opportunity to seek solutions to a variety of problems, which should lead to increased creativity, and an expression of ideas. Students in this course will have an opportunity to participate in the New York State Art Teacher Association’s Portfolio Project in the spring. This course should be taken if a student is interested in Advanced Placement Studio in Art: Drawing.


STUDIO IN CERAMICS

0.5 credit (one semester)

Grade Appropriate: 10-12

Prerequisite: Studio in Art

This class is an introduction to and exploration of clay as a medium for creative expression. Various hand building, sculptural, mold making, and wheel throwing techniques will be utilized. The four basic types of sculpture will be covered: manipulation, addition, subtraction, and substitution. All projects will be prepared for use or display by painting or glazing.


PHOTOGRAPHY 1

0.5 credit (one semester)

Grade Appropriate: 10-12

Eligible for NCCC Bridge credit

Prerequisite: Studio in Art

Photography is a one-semester class that gives students a basic understanding of traditional black and white film photography. Students will be instructed in the fundamentals of photography such as the meaning of photographic terms, functions of cameras and camera parts, methods of exposing and developing film, and printing black and white photographs. It may be possible to take this class for two semesters with instructor approval in advance.


COMPUTER GRAPHICS

0.5 credit (one semester)

Prerequisite: Studio in Art

Computer Graphics is a 20-week elective offered to students who have completed Studio in Art: Comprehensive Foundations. Students use software such as PhotoShop Elements, Word, iPhoto, iWeb and Comic Life. Projects include retouching and combining photographs, advertising design, and manipulating drawings. This course meets the computer technology graduation requirement.


Advanced Placement Studio in Art: Drawing

1.0 credit (full year)

Grade Appropriate: 11-12

Prerequisite: Studio in Art AND Drawing and Painting courses or teacher recommendation.

Advanced Placement Studio in Art: Drawing is not based on a written examination but a portfolio, which students submit for evaluation in May. Students must demonstrate a significant commitment to this course. Student portfolios consist of the following: 5 actual works of art which represent a sense of quality in their work; 12 images depicting art works which show the student’s concentration on a particular visual interest or problem; and 12 images depicting works that show the student’s knowledge of visual principles and material techniques in his or her artwork. The exam is held in May and students may receive college credit for this cause, dependent upon their exam results. As with all AP courses, students and parents must agree to the school AP agreement.
