Modern Art History

Course Description

This class will introduce the students to Modern Art (1890 – 1990).

Through the exploration of the movements of the 20th century, the students will be encouraged to consider the work in a critical manner and be able to distinguish the artists not through memorization but through an understanding of the work.

Class time will consist of lecture and presentations, discussions, and work time. Every section will investigate a style or movement and you will produce a project referring to the ideas introduced. We will discuss challenging and complex ideas. To make our discussions fruitful, it is imperative that you are fully engaged and come to class ready to participate.

After every project, we will have a critique. The critique is a time when a work is viewed and discussed. We will talk about the work’s physical and conceptual attributes and how the work relates to the ideas of the movement or style.

Course Objectives
Upon completion of this course, students will demonstrate an understanding of various 20th century art movements and art-making methodologies and be able to recognize the styles and implement them in their own work. Students will also learn about contemporary and historical artists and themes, as well as some of the language and terminology used to talk about art.

Class Policies, Expectations and Rules
In addition to attendance, you are expected to be an engaged and contributing member of this class. That means participating in critiques, being prepared, and working during the studio portions of the class.
