Mixed Media

Class Description: This class will explore a myriad of different art-making techniques and ideas from the 1910 to the present. The ready-made, installation, conceptual art, identity art, and site-specific art are some of ideas that will comprise your assignments. This is not a painting and drawing class but you might incorporate those techniques into your projects.

In that time we will execute a series of projects, each based on a particular art-making strategy. During the introduction of each new project, I will show you artists both historical and contemporary that employ the process/strategy we will be implementing. Throughout the course we will be

having an ongoing discussion about these artists and ideas.

Class time will consist of critique, discussion, watching documentaries, presentations, and work time. We will discuss challenging and complex ideas. To make our discussions fruitful, it is imperative that you are fully engaged and come to class ready to participate.

After every project, we will have a critique. The critique is a time when a work is viewed and discussed. We will talk about the workʼs physical and conceptual attributes and how the work relates to the ideas of the artist.

Objectives: Upon completion of this course, students will demonstrate an understanding of various 20th century art-making methodologies dealing with mixed media and be able to implement them in their own work. Students will also learn about contemporary and historical artists and themes, as well as some of the language and terminology used to talk about art. The exploration of various materials, their application, symbolism and reference will be considered essential to producing successful mixed media sculpture.

Attention to detail and good craftsmanship are expected.
