This accommodation is intended to help students get their ideas down fluently, without the physical barrier of handwriting or typing with fingers.
Some important considerations:
Students will still need to proofread their writing to be sure it makes sense. Often this includes adding in punctuation.
Students can dictate punctuation marks, such as saying "question mark" when they want that mark to appear.
Open Google Docs: Open a new or existing document in a supported browser like Chrome, Edge, or Safari.
Open Voice Typing: Click on the Tools menu at the top, then select Voice typing. The shortcut is Ctrl + Shift + S (Windows/ChromeOS) or Cmd + Shift + S (Mac).
Enable your microphone: A microphone box will appear. If it's your first time, you will need to grant permission for Google Docs to use your computer's microphone.
Start speaking: Click the microphone icon to start recording and speaking. Speak clearly and at a normal volume.
Add punctuation: You must say punctuation marks, such as "period," "comma," or "question mark," to add them.
Edit with voice: Use voice commands to format and edit your document, like saying "select paragraph" or "italics".
Stop typing: When you are finished, click the microphone icon again to stop.
Move to a quiet location to avoid background noise.
Speak clearly and at a normal pace.
Speak punctuation marks aloud, as they will not be added automatically.
If it's your first time, you may need to grant permission for the browser to access your microphone.
If your voice typing isn't working, check your computer's microphone settings and ensure it's not being used by another application.
