Program Manager's Message:
As the year comes to a close for most of us, it's time for reflection. What went well this year? What could have gone better? What lessons are you going to tuck into your top desk drawer for first thing you read in August?
As you reflect, don't forget that there are a lot of PD activities this summer to enjoy!

Building Thinking Classrooms in Mathematics
Experience, explore, and learn from the author himself, Dr. Peter Liljedahl, in this whole day workshop
"Sparked by observing teachers struggle to implement rich mathematics tasks to engage students in deep thinking, Peter Liljedahl has translated his 15 years of research into this practical guide on how to move toward a thinking classroom. Building Thinking Classrooms in Mathematics, Grades K–12 helps teachers implement 14 optimal practices for thinking that create an ideal setting for deep mathematics learning to occur. This guide: Provides the what, why, and how of each practice and answers teachers’ most frequently asked questions, includes firsthand accounts of how these practices foster thinking through teacher and student interviews and student work samples, offers a plethora of macro moves, micro moves, and rich tasks to get started, organizes the 14 practices into four toolkits that can be implemented in order and built on throughout the year. When combined, these unique research-based practices create the optimal conditions for learner-centered, student-owned deep mathematical thinking and learning, and have the power to transform mathematics classrooms like never before."

Connecting Multiple Representations
Students in Mrs. Peterson's Fundamentals of Algebra class have been exploring proportional relationships throughout the year. As students shifted to linear relationships, Mrs. Peterson noticed that students had not connected using tables and graphs as a tool to answer math questions. Solution: revisit proportional relationships (y = kx) using tabular and graphical representations to answer and solve questions. Students displayed their tables and graphs, and then individually compared and contrasted similarities and differences between tables and graphs. (What makes our table or graph different? How are they the same?) After working independently, students shared what they noticed. Mrs. Peterson’s favorite moment was when a student exclaimed, “Did you know that [when you use a table or graph], you get the same answer?” Next time, students will use tables and graphs to solve linear situations (y=mx+b). Having another method (such as using tables or graphs) to solve linear situations will help when students learn how to solve linear equations symbolically.

Theme: The Art of Teaching
October 19-21, Wichita at the Hyatt Regency and Century II Convention Center
Teaching is an art. It takes skill that not everyone possesses. It also requires a holistic mindset and commitment to the betterment of others, most notably students. The art of teaching is not confined to the classroom teacher. Effective, impactful teaching involves the “art” of not only the classroom or subject teacher, but also the administrator, counselor, para-professional, etc... The 2022 conference is focused on highlighting this “art” practiced by all, regardless of their role in schools, who are committed to the success of each student in Kansas.
Things to remember:
Call for Session Proposal: We will begin receiving proposals sometime in May. In the meantime, start thinking about ideas you may have for presentation. More information to come.
Student Art Contest: The contest will be similar to prior years, but the submission deadline will be in September. More information to come.
Registration: The event page, including the online registration form, will go live by the end of May. More information to come.
Math Teaching Tools & Practices
Mathematical Representations
A Window into Student Thinking: A representation created by a student is a window into their mind. For a teacher, a student’s representation is an invitation to learn about how that student is reasoning about a problem they are working to solve.
NCTM's Use and Connect Mathematical Representation: Effective teaching of mathematics engages students in making connections among mathematical representations to deepen understanding of mathematics concepts and procedures and as tools for problem solving.

YouCubed
They offer workshops at Stanford University (and periodically online) to learn how to conduct a youcubed-inspired summer camp in your own school district. Each 2-day session focuses on the teaching approach that was used in our 2015 summer camp and implemented by teachers across the US in 2019. A study of the nationwide implementation showed a significant increase in student mathematics achievement after the camp and in the following school year. The workshop includes a copy of the camp curriculum and a certificate verifying 10 Professional Development Hours (1 CEU). The next session is scheduled for May 17 and 18, 2022 at Stanford, click here to learn more about it. Other professional development and workshops are available here.
