First graders place fruit and veggie waste in bokashi bins. The waste ferments when a bokashi bran is added to the sealed container. After some time the food scraps can be composted to enrich their garden.
From a small handful of "red wigglers" acquired in 2020, the worms have multiplied and become part of our zero-waste efforts at KES. Various bins around campus are watered daily and fed once a week the discarded fruits from breakfast and lunch. The vermicast will be used to enrich the student gardens on campus.
With almost 8,000 pounds of waste in fall semester of 2023, KES has been able to keep this food out of the landfill by creating mounds of hot compost. In 1 year, we will harvest and enhance the soil on our campus.
