During the SY 2018-19 Kumu and haumāna of Papa ʻEha, brainstormed ideas to fill this space with plants that could be eaten, used for lei, makana as well as for medicinal purposes. They tested the soil quality with ʻEpekema Kumu Debbie Uwaine, tracked sunlight with Kumu Judy Cramer, and researched plants with Media Specialist Kumu Patti Louis. More research is needed before ground breaking, but they are close and should begin planting at the end of the school year or in SY 2019-2020.
Sugar cane was planted in summer of 2022. With harvesting to place at the start of spring 2023.
Wauke will be planted soon behind the sugar cane with the hopes of making kapa in the future.
Third graders planted last school year and as fourth graders, they have been tending to the keiki kalo. It should be ready for huki this school year. This will be an annual tradition as we prep for Lonoikamakahiki.
The grounds crew are working on a redesign for the space similar to the design provided by the seniors on "Give Back Day" (see below) to make the area more environmentally friendly.

BIOREMEDIATION
Using nature to help solve our bug problems is so much better than pesticides. And itʻs so beautiful.
Seeds were harvested to out plant in other locations on campus.
Waste from the māla has been recycled in our new black bins. The decaying matter will be used to to stop weeds and naturally fertilize the soil. Donʻt throw it out...RECYCLE!!!
