Mahalo for your interest in Mālama Kapālama. We would like to share some information which will help you to choose a location that best fits your group and schedule our time together. There are three different locations from which to choose, a typical schedule, items participants should bring and a waiver form. Please review the information and contact us at your convenience.
The Keanakamanō Uka hike into the mauna is recommended for upper elementary and above. A hike into the kuahiwi/forest begins at the top of the campus behind Keōpūolani Uka. The ideal time frame is between 1 ½ hours (hike only, no service) and 2 ½ hours (if you would like to venture and serve). There are three significant sites to visit: the “piko”, the stream, and the terraces. Typically, the time would be split into moving between the three areas. A short 30 minute hike will lead you to a “piko” (rock enclosure) that is currently being cleared and maintained. Nearby, there are several pā pōhaku (rock walls) along Kapālama stream to explore. In another section, maintenance of a series of rock terraces where numerous invasive trees and vines cover the base is underway.
Remnants of the Niuhelewai Stream run through our campus, with the most accessible portion being just east of Aliʻi Rd. (“Snake Hill”). The ideal time frame for this visit is 1 ½ hours. Niuhelewai Stream was once a prominent waterway that ran through the Kapālama ahupuaʻa. The stream once irrigated miles of loʻi kalo before entering the 900 acres of loko iʻa in the Iwilei area. Now, the water in Niuhelewai Stream has been greatly reduced, and we are looking to restore and revitalize the stream. In addition to stream revitalization, a short “water walk and talk” can be coordinated to follow the flow of the water through our campus. The visit can be further extended by visiting a nearby wahi kūpuna.
Keanakamanō Kula includes the māla and surrounding area to the left of the main gate. The idea time frame for this area is approximately 1 ½ hours. This site is ideal for any age and ability level. The native Hawaiian garden and the art of uhauhumu pōhaku (dry stack stone masonry) can all be seen while visiting this location. General path and flora maintenance is always appreciated and help with campus beautification. More intensive service projects can be coordinated with our campusʻ Operations Team based on their needs and availability.
Campus Hana further supports teacher/student work projects that help to enrich ʻāina based learning.
