1. Do I update now? How do I know which operating system I'm supposed to be on?
If you see a nudge window pop-up, it means it is time for you to install the latest the latest update. Read the information on the nudge window before installing anything. (more info about nudges on the How to Update webpage)
If you are still unsure about which OS you should be installing, please contact your campus Educational (Instructional) Technology Specialist (ETS) or email the helpdesk@ksbe.edu.
2. Why do I have to update so often?
During these times of numerous cyber-attacks and quick propagating malware, it is critical to install security updates to protect your system from software vulnerabilities. Further, there are additional benefits of access to new features and functions that will enhance user experience and productivity.
When Apple issues a new update, KS does not have control over when they are released.
KS Information Technology (IT) issues update nudges (update windows that pop-up on your screen) to remind you to perform an update, keeping your system up-to-date.
3. Why am I seeing this lock screen?
"Recovery is Locked" is a security feature that prevents unauthorized access to the "recovery partition" which can be used to reinstall the operating system, reset the password, or access sensitive data.
Often, you may trigger this screen popping up when the update process is interrupted or if your computer shuts down unexpectedly.
To unlock this screen, you may need to enter the administrator password. Kumu should be able to unlock this screen with your own password, students do not have admin access and will need to seek kōkua from student laptop support.
AVOID this screen by ensuring updates are completed while your laptop (or student laptop) is plugged in to a power source.
4. Why am I on a different OS than other people? (i.e. Monterey / Ventura / Sonoma)
If you have been keeping up with your updates, the nudge prompt will only allow you to load the latest approved OS (operating system). You be should prevented from installing the rolled out Apple updates which are sometimes a more current update than what has been approved.
If you have not been keeping up with your updates, clicking on the "Upgrade Now" button will NOT be blocked from use, as it normally is. It may push you to an OS which has not yet been approved. (Is this a bad thing? Check out #5 below)
It's recommended to keep up-to-date with all update prompts within the allowed time frame in order to avoid OS variations between kumu/haumāna.
5. Is it bad to be on a different OS than other people?
Don't worry, it's not necessarily bad. However, being on a different OS can make collaboration and/or instruction challenging if there are significant differences between the different systems. (i.e. Ventura has some significant changes compared to Monterey. Check out these differences by visiting the link below.)
6. How can this affect my instruction?
Students may be seeing Ventura based features during instruction and could get lost because it will not be the same thing you are sharing on screen in class via Monterey.
NOTE: If this becomes an issue with instruction, please contact your campus Educational (Instructional) Technology Specialist for assistance.
7. Do I need to be on campus or on a KS network to install my computer updates?
No, you may install updates at your convenience. They can be completed at home and on a non-KS network.
8. How long is this update going to take?
Duration of an update can vary depending on how large the update may be and what features it needs to install. Don't forget to check the nudge window, giving you an estimated duration time for the update installation, it's right below the nudge window's title.
