Internship

What is an internship?

An internship is a work experience offered by an organization, usually for students and young adults, to gain practical skills that are related to their desired major and/or career. Upon dedicating 60+ hours to an internship experience, students will earn a 0.5 elective credit, fulfill a requirement for career academy endorsement, and gain special career academy endorsement recognition.

Benefits of internships

There are two main career academies at KSH: the Humanities Academy and the STE(A)M Academy. Depending on your desired career path, this recognition may also be useful when listed on your college/job resume to showcase demonstrated interest in a field of study and professional work experience.

2. Early Career Exploration

Participating in job-shadowing and internship opportunities, during junior and/or senior year, will provide students with valuable first-hand experiences to discover their passions. Students will also be able to gain experience in fields of work that they are interested in.

3. Connection to Senior Project

All seniors at Kamehameha Schools Hawaii are required to complete a project during first semester that has a positive impact on the community. They must then present their projects, either in-person or virtually, to prominent community members who are knowledgable in students' project topics. Internships allow students to create content they can organize to fulfill the senior project requirement concurrently.

how to get an internship

Reach out to Ms. Keola Maʻa-Hewitt (contact info on "Staff Links" tab) for an internship application form. Be sure to apply as soon as possible to ensure you are matched with an internship opportunity that best suits your interests.

How to concurrently fulfill your senior project and endorsement requirements

Senior projects are required to be completed and presented at the annual Senior Expo event by all current seniors. However, career academy endorsement is optional, but can only help you in the future as you will have work experience related to a specific, desired career path or field of study that you may pursue after high school.
